Opinions, analysis and commentary
Atletico Madrid have publicly rejected any suggestion that Julian Alvarez is for sale, yet a club delegation flew to London to discuss exactly that with Arsenal. The number on the table sits close to €150m, a figure that reads less like a wall and more like an opening bid. Two seasons of near-30-goal form, a public falling out with home supporters, and a stated preference for a move to Barcelona instead have pushed both sides toward a negotiation neither ever wanted to admit was happening in public.
Atletico’s hierarchy has said, in public, that Julian Alvarez is not leaving this summer. Behind that statement, a delegation from the club traveled to London and sat down with Arsenal to talk numbers. That is not the posture of a club protecting an asset. It is the posture of a club testing what the market will pay.
The signs of a fractured relationship were already visible before any of this became public. Alvarez was jeered by sections of the home crowd during a 2-2 draw with Villarreal last season, and he was left out of the squad entirely for Atletico’s opening fixture of the 2026-27 La Liga campaign. Wanting out and being pushed out have started to look like the same thing.
The number Atletico have put in front of Arsenal is around €150m, close to £128.4m at current rates. In a separate conversation, club officials told Arsenal directly that anything above £120m, near €140m, would be enough to keep talking, with room to negotiate on how the fee gets paid rather than just how much.
Context matters here. Atletico paid up to €85m to sign Alvarez from Manchester City in 2024, and their current ask represents close to a 75 percent markup on that fee. It is not a price designed to keep him. It is a price designed to make leaving expensive.
Set the Arsenal conversation next to how Atletico have handled Barcelona and the contrast is stark. The club’s chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin has said Alvarez will never move to Barcelona, put out an official board statement to that effect, and reported the Catalan club to both FIFA and the Spanish federation over their approach to the player.
Arsenal have faced none of that hostility. Gil Marin has a longstanding working relationship with Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta from their years together at Atletico, and that familiarity has kept the tone of talks entirely different. Barcelona’s opening bid of €100m was dismissed outright. Arsenal are being given a route that Barcelona was never offered.
Whatever the number, Alvarez remains one of the most complete forwards in Europe. He finished as Atletico’s outright top scorer in 2024-25 with 29 goals and seven assists, then followed it with 20 goals and nine assists in 2025-26 to finish level with Alexander Sørloth as the club’s leading scorer again.
| Season | Apps (All Comps, approx.) | Goals | Assists |
| 2024-25 | ~50 | 29 | 7 |
| 2025-26 | ~45 | 20 | 9 |
At 26, he offers the pressing intensity and positional flexibility that suit Mikel Arteta’s system specifically. The uncertainty was never about output. It is about whether a player who has made his preference for Barcelona clear is willing to commit fully to a move to north London, with old visa complications from his Manchester City years adding friction to any return to English football.
Arsenal’s recent transfer business has been careful rather than reckless. Viktor Gyokeres arrived from Sporting CP for close to €73.5m including add-ons in July 2025, comfortably their biggest outlay in years. A fee for Alvarez at the levels being discussed would surpass that comfortably and rank among the most expensive transfers in Premier League history.
There has been talk of a structure built around Gyokeres plus cash, though his market value sits closer to €66m, leaving a gap to close. Simeone has kept his own answers measured, insisting he only judges Alvarez on recent form and leaves the business side to the boardroom. That boardroom, led by Gil Marin, is where the Atletico Madrid Julian Alvarez Arsenal transfer price will be decided.
If Atletico are willing to let Simeone’s caution go unheeded for the right price, does that make Alvarez as good as gone this summer? Drop your prediction in the comments.
