Opinions, analysis and commentary
Bangladesh fast bowler Khaled Ahmed produced a devastating spell of seam bowling to claim his maiden five-wicket haul in English county cricket, routing Lancashire for 161 on Day 1 of their County Championship Division Two clash at Canterbury. Operating in just his second appearance for Kent, the 34-year-old right-arm pacer finished with sensational figures of 5 for 42 from 15.5 overs. Stepping in after fellow countryman Hasan Mahmud was recalled by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for national duty, Khaled made an immediate impact by dismantling Lancashire’s middle and lower order. His performance earned widespread acclaim from teammates and commentators alike, reinforcing Bangladesh’s growing reputation for producing high-calibre red-ball pacers capable of excelling in challenging English conditions.
Kent captain Oliver Robinson elected to field first under heavy, overcast skies at the St Lawrence Ground, but Lancashire initially asserted control. Openers Keaton Jennings and Michael Jones constructed a solid 81-run partnership for the first wicket, blunting the new ball with patience. However, Khaled Ahmed’s introduction shifted the momentum dramatically. After starting his spell with three consecutive maidens, Khaled broke the opening stand by forcing Jennings (30) into a mistimed pull shot that was comfortably caught at point.
In his very next over, Khaled struck again with a sharp, full delivery that trapped Rocky Flintoff—son of legendary England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff—leg-before-wicket for a second-ball duck. Lancashire slumped into a severe collapse, losing eight wickets for just 80 runs. Wicketkeeper-batter Matty Hurst offered stern resistance with a 61-ball 37, but Khaled returned after tea to force an edge through to second slip off a subtle outswinger.
Khaled completed his five-wicket haul in spectacular fashion during the 59th over. He castled Mitchell Stanley with a full-pitched delivery before bowling Lancashire skipper James Anderson with his very next ball, wrapping up the innings for 161. Fellow quick Matt Milnes provided exceptional support with figures of 4 for 28. The effort marked Khaled’s 10th five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. Following the day’s play, Milnes lauded Khaled’s transition into the squad, stating: “It was obviously a big blow for us losing Hasan [Mahmud], but for Khaled to step into his shoes and do the job today, he bowled really nicely”.
