The global football landscape is currently witnessing an unprecedented legal and political clash between its two most powerful governing bodies, FIFA and UEFA. The dispute centers around FIFA President Gianni Infantino and his controversial, now-abandoned plan to sell commercial stakes in the World Cup and other global properties to private investors under the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) scheme. What began as a disagreement over commercial strategy has escalated into a high-stakes legal battle, with UEFA seeking evidence in US courts for potential criminal proceedings in Switzerland. In a fiery response, FIFA has submitted its own court filings, categorizing UEFA’s actions as a deliberate “smear campaign” designed to protect European football’s market dominance and unseat Infantino.
The root of this bitter conflict lies in the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). Under this plan, FIFA sought to sell a 20 percent stake in its commercial operations to private investors, such as the American investment fund Thrive Eternal, for an estimated $4.2 billion. FIFA argued the cash injection would drastically boost funding for national associations worldwide, strengthening the sport in developing nations.
However, UEFA firmly opposed the initiative, labeling it an “act of coercion” and alleging “criminal mismanagement” by Infantino. UEFA lawyers recently filed a 56-page document in a US federal court seeking discovery of documents, claiming Infantino promoted a “fraudulently off-market price” for his own benefit. In retaliation, FIFA filed counter-documents in New York, demanding the court reject UEFA’s application.
FIFA’s legal team claims UEFA’s true motivation is purely economic protectionism. According to FIFA, UEFA fears that injecting billions of dollars into smaller footballing nations would increase global competition, thereby eroding UEFA’s market power and threatening the supremacy of flagship European tournaments like the Champions League. FIFA also pointed out that UEFA is attempting to seek discovery for a Swiss criminal proceeding that does not even exist yet, further supporting their claim that these filings are merely glorified press releases meant to tarnish Infantino’s reputation ahead of upcoming elections.
