Opinions, analysis and commentary
Erling Haaland is the safer armband for Gameweek 8 this weekend, even with a trip to Aston Villa, because his output is documented and his penalty duty gives him a floor. Bukayo Saka offers a fine ceiling, but his week is clouded by a midweek Champions League tie in Munich. Doubling a forward who averages 12.8 beats gambling on a winger coming off a quiet night at Nottingham Forest, particularly when the safest route is also the most obvious one.
Haaland has 77 points at 12.8 a game, and his latest score is 22, taken from the Ipswich game in Round 7. His price is £13,320,000, and 65.2% of squads already own him, which makes him the template pick. In the league, he has scored eight goals from seven outings for a City side that has won all seven matches, and spot-kicks are his job.
Fitness is the single question mark. A knock meant City handled him carefully against AEK Athens, naming him only among the substitutes, and Enzo Maresca has said he is fine to start on Saturday. City’s Semenyo is sidelined by a knee injury. Villa, meanwhile, have shipped 11 league goals in seven games, five of them at home, so the fixture is softer than the name suggests, and the 12:30 BST kick-off comes first.
Saka has three league goals from seven appearances, takes Arsenal’s penalties and shares corner duty, which gives him several routes to points. The Forest game showed the flip side, though. He had no shots, delivered seven crosses and earned a 6/10 rating while defenders crowded him. Doubling that kind of outing would hurt.
Midweek, Arsenal go to Bayern Munich, and Everton arrive on Saturday for a 3pm BST start, so rotation and tired legs are live risks. Saliba and Christos Tzolis remain unavailable, Piero Hincapié may return, and Noni Madueke is pressing for a left-sided place after his winner at Forest. Everton conceded five in their first six games before a 2-0 loss to Chelsea in which they were outshot 18-6.
Captains have their score doubled and no bonus points are awarded, which means a captain must deliver volume. Last season Haaland’s average was 12.2, and no other forward cleared 10. That volume requirement quietly favours the striker who takes the penalties and shoots most. Only Johan Manzambi’s three-game sample beats his current average, as the table shows.
| Player | Opponent | Price | Season Average | Latest Score |
| Erling Haaland | Aston Villa (A) | £13,320,000 | 12.8 | 22 |
| Bukayo Saka | Everton (H) | £10,470,000 | 10.3 | 14 |
| Diego Gomez | Liverpool (A) | £8,700,000 | 10.5 | 17 |
| Johan Manzambi | Manchester City (H) | £6,830,000 | 13.3 | 17 |
Timing helps too. Haaland’s match is the first of the day, so you get City’s lineup information well before Arsenal play. A rolling lockout means each swap stays available until that player’s own game starts, so nothing is forced early. An early kick-off is a free scouting report.
Diego Gomez sits at £8,700,000 with an average of 10.5 and only 2.5% ownership, but his Brighton side visit Liverpool, a hard assignment. Pedro Neto produced 24 in Round 7 and costs £8.07 million, owned by a mere 0.8% of squads, and his Chelsea side hosts Tottenham.
Manzambi, priced at £6,830,000, has averaged 13.3 across three games, but injury doubt hangs over him, and three games prove little. Because Haaland is in 65.2% of squads, picking someone else only helps if you can live with watching rivals bank double points whenever he scores. Chasing rank with an unproven name is a bet, not a plan. Rank chasers can justify the gamble, but leaders cannot.
The call is simple: captain Haaland and make Saka your vice. Should Haaland miss out, the vice-captain collects the double, so the pairing offers insurance on both sides. His scoring rate and spot-kick role count for more than a tricky opponent. Saka’s Bayern week and muted display at Forest make him the riskier armband.
Strip away the glamour and the decision rests on evidence. The Supercoach EPL gameweek 8 captain choice should be Haaland, and the early kick-off lets you tweak the rest of your lineup once City’s team news lands, before Arsenal even kick a ball.

Should I back Haaland or Saka as my armband this week?
Back Haaland, with Saka as your vice-captain. Haaland averages 12.8 and takes penalties, while Saka plays Bayern Munich in midweek and managed no shots at Nottingham Forest.
Is Haaland a good captain choice against Aston Villa?
Yes, he averages 12.8 and is expected to start. Villa have conceded five goals in three home league games, which adds to his appeal as a double-points option.
How does the captaincy multiplier work in Supercoach EPL?
Your captain’s score is doubled. If he does not play, the vice-captain inherits the double, and the format awards no bonus points, so volume of scoring is what matters.
When does the lockout fall for Haaland and Saka?
Lockout is rolling, so each player locks when his own match begins. Haaland kicks off at 12:30 BST on Saturday, while Saka follows at 3 pm BST against Everton.
Which differential captain options exist this week?
Pedro Neto and Diego Gomez are the leading choices, both owned by under 3%. Neto hit 24 in Round 7, while Gomez has an average of 10.5 and costs £8,700,000.
