Opinions, analysis and commentary
Liverpool spent more than any club in Europe this summer, yet the teenager most likely to define their season cost nothing at all. Ngumoha’s route into regular first-team football runs through stacked competition at left wing, a head coach still learning what he has, and cup fixtures that carry more weight than usual. He already broke a senior scoring record before his seventeenth birthday. Holding a place past September means outlasting rotation and forcing Iraola’s hand before loan speculation builds around him. That is the test now in front of him.
Four signings worth a combined £404.5m have reshaped the attack. Alexander Isak arrived for £125m, Bradley Barcola for £123m, Florian Wirtz for £116.5m and Milos Kerkez for £40m, covering almost every attacking and wide role. Victor Munoz followed from Osasuna, adding further depth on the left.
Curtis Jones left for Inter Milan in a £30m deal. He was the academy’s last local product and a boyhood supporter of the club, and his exit leaves the squad without a single player from the city, a strange gap for a club built on local identity.
One academy graduate has already made the financial outlay look almost beside the point. He made 29 appearances across all competitions last season and started the final three Premier League matches, proof that a teenager can hold a place in a squad built from nine-figure transfers.
His breakthrough came at Newcastle in August 2025, a 100th-minute winner on his Premier League debut that made him the youngest scorer in the club’s history at 16 years and 361 days. Now 17 and playing left wing directly in Barcola’s zone, weekly league starts look unlikely.
The realistic route runs through the League Cup, the FA Cup and European rotation, competitions where Iraola will need fresh legs. The head coach watched him closely during pre-season in Chicago, and the early signs point to a squad role, even if on the fringes.
Jurgen Klopp left behind a simple framework: train academy talent at the Kirkby facility alongside senior players and trust them in rotation once the moment arrived. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones were its clearest products, proof the pathway could produce genuine regulars rather than fringe squad players.
That structure technically survives under Iraola, with academy director Alex Inglethorpe still describing clear routes for talented youngsters. But £274m invested in the attack alone has narrowed the entry point, and breaking the British transfer record twice in one summer changes what young players are competing for.
They are no longer chasing starting berths. They are chasing cup minutes, and even those are now contested by teammates who cost tens of millions each.
Athletic Bilbao have fielded only players born in the Basque Country or developed by clubs from that region since 1912. Their approach is summed up in one idea: homegrown talent and local support remove any need for outside recruitment, a model built around identity, not market size.
Copying that philosophy is impossible for a global club with a global transfer strategy, but the structural lesson still applies. Meaningful minutes for academy talent need to be built into a system deliberately, not left to chance.
Reserving genuine competitive football in cup competitions, rather than late cameos once games are decided, would turn a symbolic pathway into a real one. That distinction matters more with every expensive signing added to the group.
Nyoni’s season told a different story entirely. The 19-year-old midfielder made 12 appearances off the bench, started only twice, and managed just 237 minutes, despite interest from several clubs during a mid-season loan window that Liverpool blocked.
Jones’s move to Inter has opened space in midfield that Nyoni is now expected to help fill. Inglethorpe has described him as ready to take the next step, though a loan still looks the more realistic outcome.
The contrast with Ngumoha is instructive. One found a vacancy that briefly opened on the left before Barcola’s arrival closed it again, while the other has waited on a midfield that has never quite cleared space. The Rio Ngumoha Liverpool first-team chance says more about how this squad works than any transfer fee attached to it.

Who are Liverpool’s other academy prospects this season?
Michael Laffey, Ryan Cowley and Ellis Hickman lead the group behind the senior fringe players. Hickman is only 17 and can play at right back or in midfield.
Why did Curtis Jones leave Liverpool?
He completed a £30m move to Inter Milan in the summer of 2026. Jones was entering the final year of his contract at Anfield when Inter made their move.
Does the Liverpool squad include any local players?
No, the 2026-27 squad has no player from the city or its surrounding area. That gap opened only after Jones departed for Italy, leaving the group without a single Scouse regular.
How much did Liverpool spend on transfers this summer?
Liverpool topped the Premier League net spend table at £218.4m. That figure was the highest outlay of any English club across the entire summer 2026 window.
What is Athletic Bilbao’s policy on signing players?
Bilbao only signs players born in the Basque Country or developed at Basque-region clubs. The club has kept that self-imposed rule voluntarily since 1912, with no external regulation.
