Atletico signed Julián Álvarez to be their long-term number nine, and for a season and a half that plan worked. Now Barcelona want him as Robert Lewandowski’s successor, and Atletico have refused to sanction a deal to a domestic rival, leaving Álvarez stuck between two clubs and skipping training as a result. If he leaves, whether to Barcelona or through the Arsenal route now being floated, Diego Simeone loses more than a striker. He loses the one forward who ties his entire attack together.
The rift traces back to Álvarez’s £75 million move from Manchester City in August 2024, made to finally get the featured striker role Erling Haaland never allowed him at the Etihad. He delivered immediately, finishing 2024-25 as the club’s outright top scorer with 29 goals in all competitions. That form is exactly what made Barcelona come calling. For Simeone, who built his entire post-2024 rebuild around Álvarez as the focal point, the timing could not be worse just as the new season begins.
Atletico’s response turned the situation toxic. Club CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín flatly ruled out any sale to Barcelona and framed the club itself as the victim of the saga. Álvarez responded by missing three days of training and sitting out the Sevilla fixture entirely, a clear signal the relationship has broken down.
Look at what he actually produced last season and the scale of the problem becomes clear. In La Liga alone, he managed 8 goals and 4 assists across 29 appearances and 1,904 minutes, while his all-competition total of 20 goals matched Sørloth for the club lead. His value was never only about the scoreline; he links play between midfield and attack, wins penalties, and presses with an intensity none of Simeone’s other forwards match.
| Player | Role | Goals | Assists | Minutes |
| Julián Álvarez | Centre-forward | 8 | 4 | 1,904 |
| Alexander Sørloth | Centre-forward | 13 | 0 | 1,981 |
| Ademola Lookman | Winger / Second striker | 2 | 0 | 480 |
None of that shows up in a highlight reel, but it’s exactly what makes him difficult to replace with a single signing. Atlético’s front line would lose its connector, not just its top scorer.
Take Álvarez out of the side and Simeone is left searching for a forward who can do all of it at once. Sørloth led La Liga scoring at the club with 13 goals in 35 games, but intermediaries are already offering him to Manchester United, meaning Atletico could lose both frontline options in the same window.
Álvarez and Sørloth combined for 93 goals across the last two seasons between them. Losing both at once, a real possibility given Sørloth’s exit links and a preseason injury of his own, would leave a gap no single squad player currently covers.
Simeone’s internal options are thin. Ademola Lookman arrived from Atalanta in January 2026 and managed 2 La Liga goals in 8 appearances after joining mid-season, and he’s since been trialled as a second striker rather than an out-and-out nine. Beyond Sørloth and Lookman, the club has no natural centre-forward waiting in reserve.
Names beyond the current squad are already circulating. Nicolas Jackson has been evaluated internally, though no deal is advanced, while Viktor Gyökeres and Dušan Vlahovic have both been floated as potential arrivals if Atletico do sanction an exit. None of those conversations have moved beyond exploratory contact so far this window.
Barcelona remain Álvarez’s stated preference, but Atletico’s refusal to deal with a domestic rival has pushed Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, into the frame as the only realistic exit route. The club has set a deadline for Álvarez to decide between opening Arsenal talks or committing to stay, though Arsenal have yet to table a formal bid.
Simeone himself has stayed guarded in public, saying only that he cannot speak for what is in the player’s head, while still rating him as potentially the best forward at the club. What happens next defines Atletico Madrid’s La Liga 2026 without Álvarez as a real scenario rather than a hypothetical: Simeone’s system loses its physical presence up front, and every week without a signing narrows the squad’s title ambitions before a ball is even kicked.
