Deadline day signings expose exactly what a club believes it needs, and this window has been brutally honest about it. Arsenal spent to fix real gaps in midfield and defense. Manchester United bought a third central midfielder while their striker search stalled again. Tottenham committed over £237 million and could still finish without a recognized number nine. Chelsea splashed $476 million gross yet only partly solved their back-line problems. Panic in the closing days makes clubs fill secondary gaps and carry the real weakness into next season.
Gross spending across the division has topped $3 billion, as the World Cup delayed deals into the final week. Chelsea lead at $476 million, ahead of Tottenham’s £237 million six-signing haul. Arsenal’s net spend sits at $218 million, while City’s £116 million deal for Elliot Anderson is the single biggest fee this window.
Manchester United confirmed Carlos Baleba’s £65 million move from Brighton on August 25. Five clubs, Brentford, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland, have each spent under $100 million. That gap shows how unevenly this division competes for talent.
Arsenal enter deadline week in the most coherent shape of any club in the league. Their gaps were midfield control and defensive cover, and Bruno Guimaraes plus Ezri Konsa filled both directly. Aston Villa moved early, signing striker Johan Manzambi and midfielder Joao Gomes before Ollie Watkins could leave. Newcastle, stripped of three key departures, brought in winger Bazoumana Toure to start rebuilding rather than patch things late.
| Club | Real Recent Key Signing | Actual Position | Position Addressed? |
| Arsenal | Mikel Merino / Riccardo Calafiori | Central Midfield / Defender | Yes (Strengthened core depth) |
| Man United | Joshua Zirkzee / Leny Yoro | Striker / Centre-Back | Yes (Brought in direct striker depth) |
| Tottenham | Dominic Solanke | Centre-Forward | Yes (Signed a record true #9) |
| Aston Villa | Amadou Onana / Ian Maatsen | Midfielder / Left-Back | Yes (Replaced Douglas Luiz) |
| Chelsea | Pedro Neto / Joao Felix | Winger / Forward | Partially (Added massive forward depth) |
| Man City | Savinho / Ilkay Gundogan | Winger / Midfielder | Yes (Secured immediate depth) |
The table tracks how six clubs’ recent arrivals match their real needs. Most grades come back positive, and the smartest business often happens away from panic. Chelsea’s grade is only partial.
Three clubs stand out for buying the wrong position under pressure. United confirmed Baleba as a third senior central midfielder while a clinical striker and a commanding defensive leader remain unaddressed. Tottenham have spent more than £237 million across six players, including two central midfielders, and still lack a reliable centre forward.
Savinho’s late arrival from City adds another winger, not the number nine Tottenham have chased since preseason. Crystal Palace brought in winger Dwight McNeil while Mateta’s future at the club stays unresolved. Buying depth in a spot you already have does nothing for the position left empty.
This pattern is not new. United tracked Baleba for 18 months, suggesting real intent rather than panic, yet chasing a midfielder that long while the striker search stalls points to a structural problem, not a rushed decision. Clubs spent record money last year too, and several entered this season carrying the exact weakness already flagged.
Tottenham’s failure to land a proven striker keeps repeating across windows. They have signed two central midfielders, Tonali and Fernandes, for a combined £177 million, while chasing Marmoush and Gakpo in the final days. Letting urgency override a clear plan means overpaying for a secondary need while the real gap stays open.
If Tottenham’s pursuit of Marmoush and Gakpo collapses before September 1, a £237 million squad starts the season without a trustworthy number nine, the same gap that nearly cost their top-flight status last year. United’s midfield-heavy group leaves Michael Carrick trusting unproven forwards in a league where they already lost their opener to Hull City.
Arsenal look best placed of anyone, because their business was targeted rather than reactive and their depth is real, not paper-thin. Clubs that fixed genuine weaknesses this summer will feel the benefit across all 38 games. The Premier League 2026 deadline day signings that missed their actual target are already setting up the same argument for January.
