Opinions, analysis and commentary
Barcola must beat 7 goals and 7 assists, the modest return Salah posted in his farewell Premier League season, just to clear the floor Liverpool have set. His own 11-goal PSG season already does that. But a £120 million fee demands more: it demands chasing peak Salah, the version who once won a Golden Boot and a title in the same year. That gap between floor and ceiling is what Barcola must now close. It is the only number that will decide whether the transfer window’s biggest outlay was worth it.
Salah’s Anfield exit was not sudden. Three consecutive benchings preceded a public flashpoint after a 3-3 draw at Leeds, where he made clear he felt discarded by the club he had served for years. His relationship with then-manager Arne Slot never recovered from that moment.
Liverpool finished the 2025-26 season fifth, 25 points adrift of champions Arsenal, and both sides agreed there was no path back. Salah left a year early on a mutually terminated contract and signed for Trabzonspor on a free transfer, taking a two-year deal in the Turkish Super Lig. The exit left a genuine gap on the right side of Liverpool’s attack, one the club moved quickly to fill.
The comparison Liverpool are working from is stark once it’s laid out side by side. Salah’s final season brought 7 goals and 7 assists from 27 appearances and 2,149 minutes, a return that felt underwhelming by his own standards. Barcola’s last campaign at PSG produced 11 goals and 2 assists in fewer minutes, 1,750 across 29 games, while finishing as the club’s own top league scorer.
| Player | Season | Competition | Goals | Assists | Minutes |
| Mohamed Salah | 2025-26 (Final LFC) | Premier League | 7 | 7 | 2,149 |
| Bradley Barcola | 2025-26 (Final PSG) | Ligue 1 | 11 | 2 | 1,750 |
| Bradley Barcola | 2026-27 (LFC so far) | Premier League | N/A | N/A | N/A |
Those numbers only tell part of the story. Goals scored in Ligue 1 do not automatically convert into Premier League output, and Barcola arrives with zero minutes logged for his new club as of this piece. The raw data sets the target; proving it in England is the separate job still ahead of him.
Salah’s 2025-26 return of 7 goals and 7 assists in 27 games looks modest next to what came before. The season prior, he won both the Golden Boot and the Playmaker award, scoring 34 goals in all competitions as Liverpool lifted a 20th league title. That contrast is the real story behind his exit: a player capable of carrying an attack alone had stopped doing it, and the club needed proof his successor could.
His final-season numbers are now the line Barcola has to clear, not the one he has to admire from a distance.
Barcola’s final season in Paris produced 11 Ligue 1 goals in 29 appearances, enough to finish as PSG’s own top scorer in the league even as the club won both Ligue 1 and the Champions League. The year before that, he managed 14 goals and 10 assists in 34 outings, a sign the underlying output has been consistent rather than a one-off spike.
On raw numbers, he already outscores Salah’s farewell campaign, though Ligue 1 and the Premier League rarely reward the same kind of movement. Style of play matters too: Barcola thrives cutting inside from the left, a role Liverpool have earmarked for him on the right, which adds an extra variable Salah never had to navigate.
As of August 30, the deal remains unsigned, with the transfer window closing on September 2. Liverpool’s manager has said he hopes for good news soon and admitted the club urgently needs to fill the right-wing spot before then. With no Premier League minutes yet to his name, Barcola’s entire case still rests on what he did in Paris.
A realistic first season would put him at 12 to 15 goals with 8 or more assists, a tally that clears Salah’s farewell numbers with room to spare. That is what the Liverpool Premier League 2026 Barcola goal numbers conversation really comes down to: not whether he starts, but whether he finishes the year having actually closed the gap he was bought to close.
