The visitors’ willingness to play an open game is the danger, because United’s defenders have barely played together. Matchweek 8 brings Michael Carrick’s side face to face with them at Old Trafford this Sunday, 25 October, with United in 13th with seven points and Bournemouth two places lower with six. Seven matches have produced a single league victory for each club. Injuries have scrambled the defensive unit, and a team happy to trade chances could punish the disorder. The home side’s winless slide adds to the danger.
United have gone five league games without a win, drawing four and losing one. The lone success this season came on 30 August, a 5-2 result over Ipswich, and across all competitions the winless run stretches to seven matches, a first since 2015. Carrick has conceded that his side has lost its way, which is a rare admission this early in a season and tells you how the dressing room feels.
Defence is the root of it. Every one of their seven league matches has seen them concede, so there has been no clean sheet, and twelve goals have gone in over their last six matches in every competition. In the league alone, the last six produced eight goals against, while Bournemouth shipped 11, so neither side can claim a sound foundation.
| Team | Goals Conceded (Last 6) | Clean Sheets (Last 6) | Shots Faced Per Game | Shots on Target Faced |
| Manchester United | 8 | 0 | 11.0 | 4.4 |
| Bournemouth | 11 | 1 | 9.6 | 3.7 |
Carrick has to build the defence around a long absentee list. Manuel Ugarte has a cruciate ligament injury, and Benjamin Sesko, Kobbie Mainoo, Patrick Dorgu and Luke Shaw are out as well. The likeliest unit has Yoro on the right, Maguire and de Ligt in the middle, and Dalot moved across to the left, which asks Dalot to adapt to a different side.
This exact quartet has not started together yet this term. De Ligt returned from 325 days out at Como on 21 October, when Yoro was suspended. The Leeds line-up featured Dalot, Martinez, Yoro and Maguire, and the Como one Mazraoui, de Ligt, Maguire and Dalot. Martinez faces a fitness test late on, so even this shape is unsettled.
Marco Rose wants an open contest on Sunday and expects United to arrive fired up and intense. That plan gives Bournemouth space to attack a defensive unit that has barely played together, and it explains why the visitors will not sit deep. Trading blows suits a side confident in its forwards, and Rose seems to believe his are.
Evanilson arrives having found the net in each of his last three league outings, and Marcus Tavernier has four goals in the league. Junior Kroupi should return after a foot problem, which adds another runner for United’s makeshift defenders to track and gives Rose more options from the bench.
At the Vitality Stadium, they beat Sturm Graz and AC Milan 3-0 and Sunderland 2-0, an eight-goal return without reply across three games. That run shows what a settled, confident group can do when the game is in front of its own crowd, and it explains why Rose is so bullish about going toe to toe.
Travel changes the story: one point from three league trips, four goals scored and nine conceded, including a 5-1 hammering on 10 October at Chelsea. They have only a single clean sheet in the league, with nine of the 13 goals shipped arriving after the break. Opening the game up carries risk for Rose’s side as well.
The head-to-head favours the visitors. Bournemouth have not lost any of the last six Premier League matches against United, winning two and drawing four, and they scored every time. Old Trafford has hosted two Bournemouth 3-0 wins, in December 2023 and a year later, and a 4-4 draw last December, so the ground holds no fear for them.
A makeshift defence that fails to settle hands quickly Bournemouth the kind of match they want, and the Manchester United vs Bournemouth Premier League back four question leans towards the visitors. My forecast is a 2-1 away win, with United’s frailty the deciding factor.
Will Carrick’s makeshift defence hold at Old Trafford, or does Bournemouth’s open game finish United off? Tell us in the comments.
Why are United struggling so badly this season?
They have won only once in seven league games. There has been no clean sheet and the injury list is long, which makes this their poorest start to a top-flight season since 1986-87.
Just how leaky has United’s defence been lately?
They shipped eight goals over their last six league games. Across all competitions, the figure rises to 12 in six matches, which includes four conceded at Como, so the problem is not confined to the league.
Who is Bournemouth’s current manager?
Marco Rose is in charge. He replaced Andoni Iraola ahead of 2026-27 and claimed his first Premier League victory with a win over Sunderland on 18 October, so he arrives at Old Trafford with some momentum.
Which United players are injured for the Bournemouth game?
Sesko, Mainoo, Dorgu, Shaw and Ugarte are all unavailable. Late checks are needed on Martinez and Rashford, and Mazraoui’s status is mixed, with one feed listing a back problem and another expecting him to be dropped.
What time is the kick-off at Old Trafford on Sunday?
Kick-off is 2:00 pm UK time on Sunday 25 October. In Bangladesh, that works out at 8:00 pm, and Sky Sports Main Event shows the game live in the UK.
