Opinions, analysis and commentary
Spain lifted the World Cup. Leandro Paredes went home with a ten-match ban, ten times longer than the one-game suspension handed to Gavi for the same post-final scuffle. Paredes says Gavi threw the first punch, and on the surface the gap in punishment looks impossible to justify. FIFA’s own charge sheet tells a more layered story, one built on separate legal articles rather than who moved first. Here is what actually happened, and why the numbers ended up this far apart.
Spain won the 2026 final 1-0 in extra time on July 19, with Ferran Torres scoring the only goal. Within seconds of the final whistle, as Spain’s substitutes poured onto the pitch, confrontations broke out across the field.
Footage and FIFA’s own disciplinary report describe Paredes grabbing Spain defender Eric Garcia by the throat, then pushing Gavi to the ground and appearing to strike him in the face. Thiago Almada was separately involved in unsporting conduct toward Garcia, while Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was caught on camera striking Dani Olmo in an unrelated pocket of the same chaos. Paredes was shown a red card on the night, later removed from FIFA’s system pending the formal disciplinary process.
FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings on July 29 and confirmed sanctions on August 21. Paredes received a ten-match ban and a ninety-thousand-dollar fine, a punishment that sits alongside the sanction given to Luis Suarez in 2014 as among the harshest in the tournament’s history.
Nahuel Molina was handed seven matches and the same fine. Thiago Almada and Gavi each received a single match and thirty-thousand-dollar fines, while Roberto Ayala picked up three matches and a further thirty-thousand-dollar penalty. The Argentine federation was fined a combined amount covering the brawl, a banner from the semi-final and discriminatory chants across the tournament.
Paredes vs Gavi: FIFA Disciplinary Comparison
| Player | Incident / Charge | Ban Length | Fine |
| Leandro Paredes (ARG) | 3 counts of assault: grabbed Garcia, pushed and struck Gavi | 10 matches | $90,000 |
| Gavi (ESP) | 1 count of unsporting behaviour, struck Paredes in the chest | 1 match | $30,000 |
Paredes broke his silence after Boca Juniors beat Lanús in the Argentine league, calling the punishment excessive and pointing out that Gavi struck him in the chest first yet received a fraction of the sanction. His argument is simple: whoever throws the first blow should not walk away with the lighter penalty.
The AFA is preparing a frame-by-frame breakdown of every incident for FIFA’s Appeals Committee and has formally requested the full grounds of the ruling, which both parties are entitled to seek within ten days. If that internal route fails, the case can still be escalated to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
FIFA has not yet published its full reasoned decision, but the charge sheet itself explains the structural logic. Paredes was charged with three separate counts of assault, the most serious physical misconduct category in the FIFA Disciplinary Code, while Gavi faced a single, lighter charge of unsporting behaviour.
Each assault count carries a minimum three-match ban, so three counts produce a baseline of nine matches, with the committee adding one more to reach ten. Gavi’s single unsporting behaviour charge aligned with the standard one-match penalty. These are simply not equivalent offences under FIFA’s rules, even though both players were involved in the very same post-match confrontation.
A ten-match ban amounts to roughly a year in international exile. Argentina have ten fixtures scheduled through June 2027, and FIFA has approved a request from the AFA allowing the suspension to be served across both friendlies and competitive matches, which protects Paredes from missing the 2028 Copa America.
Paredes himself is now questioning whether he even wants to continue, citing both the ban and Lionel Messi’s international retirement as reasons it may prove difficult to stay involved. He has yet to speak with coach Lionel Scaloni about his future. Whatever happens next, the entire Paredes vs Gavi FIFA ban World Cup 2026 saga has left Argentina’s midfield thinner and its captain’s international career in genuine doubt.
Was FIFA right to punish Paredes so much more heavily than Gavi, or does the gap still feel unfair? Let us know your take.
