Opinions, analysis and commentary
Ivory Coast and Norway both finished runners-up in their groups, and on paper Norway are the stronger side. Erling Haaland scored four goals in two appearances before being rested, and the individual quality through midfield is hard to match. But Ivory Coast carry one specific habit that head-to-head comparisons don’t capture: they scored first in every group game they played. That simple fact has repeatedly made opponents chase the result, and it may be the most relevant number heading into AT&T Stadium.
Amad Diallo’s 90th-minute strike beat Ecuador 1-0. Franck Kessie put Ivory Coast ahead of Germany at the 30-minute mark before Deniz Undav’s late double turned it around. Nicolas Pepé opened the scoring in the 7th minute against Curaçao in a 2-0 win. Three matches, three different goal timings, and Ivory Coast first in every one.
That makes them only the second African nation in World Cup history to open the scoring in all three group games. Timing ranged from the 7th minute to the 90th. This isn’t about early pressure or a set-piece routine; it’s about finding a way to be first and repeatedly putting opponents in a position where they have to chase.

*Norway made 10 changes; Haaland and Ødegaard rested.
Norway’s first-choice XI never trailed in the group stage. They led throughout in wins over Iraq (4-1) and Senegal (3-2), conceding only while already ahead. The 4-1 loss to France came with Solbakken making ten changes and resting both Haaland and Ødegaard, with Dembélé scoring twice inside 20 minutes against a reserve back line.
What the group stage confirms is a Norway defence that conceded seven goals in three games without a clean sheet. Their back line, set up to push high and support transitions, has shown confusion against teams that counter at pace. Ivory Coast’s front line is built for exactly that.
The statistical case for Diomande is historically unusual. He is the only player since 2000 to complete ten or more dribbles and create ten or more chances in his first three World Cup appearances. No player in the tournament combined fifteen or more progressive carries, ten or more key passes, and ten or more successful dribbles across those three games.
He set up Pepé’s 7th-minute opener against Curaçao and delivered the cross Kessie converted against Germany. A player who carries forward under pressure, creates from open play, and beats defenders one-on-one is the specific kind of threat a high defensive line struggles to handle in transition.
Diallo came off the bench in two of Ivory Coast’s three group games and scored the most important goal of their campaign: the 90th-minute winner against Ecuador. He doesn’t need to start to be decisive. If this game is tight past the 70th minute, Faé has a player on the bench who scored in the 90th last time the match needed to be settled.
Ivory Coast were eliminated in the group stage at every previous World Cup: 2006, 2010, and 2014. This is their first knockout appearance in the country’s football history.
Win in Arlington, and they face Brazil or Japan in the Round of 16. Haaland is expected to start after his rest, and full-strength Norway will test Ivory Coast in ways the group stage didn’t. But the Ivory Coast vs Norway FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 32 tactics question returns to one gap: Norway have no evidence yet of how they perform when they’re the side doing the chasing.

Can Ivory Coast beat Norway in the FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 32?
It is a close fixture with no clear tactical edge either way. Ivory Coast’s first-scorer habit and counter-attacking threat give them a realistic path despite Norway’s individual quality.
Who is Yan Diomande at the 2026 World Cup?
Diomande is a 19-year-old winger and the only player since 2000 with 10-plus dribbles and 10-plus chances in his first three World Cup games. He set up two of Ivory Coast’s group-stage goals.
How many goals has Erling Haaland scored in the FIFA World Cup 2026?
Haaland scored four goals in the group stage, netting twice against Iraq and twice against Senegal. He was rested for Norway’s final group game and is expected to start against Ivory Coast.
What is Norway’s defensive record in the 2026 World Cup group stage?
Norway conceded seven goals across three group games without keeping a clean sheet. The back line has shown vulnerability to pace in behind, though the heaviest defeat came with a heavily rotated lineup.
Has Ivory Coast ever qualified for the round of 16 at a World Cup?
No; Ivory Coast went out in the group stage at all three previous World Cups: 2006, 2010, and 2014. It’s the best result in the nation’s World Cup history.
