Match 21 | ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 | Headingley, Leeds | 23 June 2026
Pakistan has already been eliminated. Australia have won 13 of 15 T20Is against them without a single defeat. On paper, Match 21 at Headingley looks like a dead rubber. But the two players at the centre of it, Ellyse Perry, who just became the first cricketer in history to play 50 T20 World Cup matches, and Fatima Sana, who made history of her own against South Africa, are worth watching regardless of what the stakes say.
When Ellyse Perry walked out against the Netherlands on June 20 at the Rose Bowl, she did something no cricketer had done before. Her 50th T20 World Cup appearance took her past Rohit Sharma’s men’s record of 47, backed by a career spanning 559 runs at 27.95 and 42 wickets at 17.16, the third-highest wicket tally in Women’s T20 World Cup history.
She scored 1 run off 3 balls in that match, caught at deep midwicket off Heather Siegers, and didn’t bowl as Australia won by 98 runs. She made 36 against South Africa and contributed with bat and ball against Bangladesh. The Netherlands game was an off-day rather than a pattern.
Australia’s head-to-head against Pakistan makes the result close to predictable: 13 wins from 15 meetings, 2 no-results, no losses. Pakistan have never beaten Australia in a T20I, and they arrive at Headingley having lost all three group matches.
| Metric | Ellyse Perry | Fatima Sana |
| Role this tournament | Batter / occasional bowler | Captain, all-rounder |
| Career T20 WC batting average | 27.95 | 35.00 |
| Career T20 WC strike rate | 115.02 | 139.24 |
| 2026 WC wickets | Not isolated | 7 (2/33, 3/16, 2/18) |
| 2026 WC batting | 36 vs SA; 1 vs NL | 0 vs IND; 55* vs SA; 10 vs BAN |
| Career T20 WC wickets | 42 (3rd all-time) | 53 |
| Individual landmark | First to 50 T20 WC matches (M/F) | First captain to score a fifty and take 3 WC wickets in the same match |
The gap in verifiable career data is real. Fatima Sana’s T20 World Cup-specific career average couldn’t be confirmed. What is confirmed is her 2026 tournament record.
Against India on June 14 at Edgbaston, Fatima Sana took 2/33 and was out for a duck. Pakistan lost by 64 runs. Four days later, against South Africa, she scored 55* off 38 balls (6 fours, 2 sixes) and took 3/16 off 2.5 overs. No captain in Women’s T20 World Cup history had scored a fifty and taken three wickets in the same match. Pakistan still lost by 2 wickets.
Against Bangladesh on June 20 at the Hampshire Bowl, she took 2/18 off 4 overs and made 10. Pakistan lost by 23 runs and were eliminated. Seven wickets, 66 runs, three defeats. Fatima Sana did everything possible with the ball. Pakistan’s batting fell short every time.
Perry’s record is the headline, but Australia will want more than a ceremonial appearance at Headingley. She batted in the top order across the first two group matches; 36 against South Africa is a proper T20 contribution, and her bowling, when deployed, carries enough variation to trouble any lineup.
She didn’t bowl against the Netherlands. Whether that was workload management or simply redundant in a 98-run win, no restriction has been reported publicly. Against a Pakistan side that lost to Bangladesh, Perry’s bowling could be decisive.
Pakistan has nothing to play for in group-stage terms and a record against Australia that offers no encouragement. But Fatima Sana’s 7 wickets and maiden World Cup fifty suggest she won’t treat this as a send-off. She bowled well in every match. If she removes Perry early and the Australian top order stutters, the picture changes.
It won’t alter the standings. But the contest between a player making history across 50 matches and a captain who made history in three is the reason to watch Australia vs Pakistan Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Headingley on June 23.
