The International Cricket Council (ICC) is preparing to revolutionize the gentleman’s game. In a massive development ahead of the upcoming annual board meeting in Ahmedabad on May 30, reports indicate that several groundbreaking rule changes are set to be approved and implemented starting October 1. From unprecedented tactical innovations to significant technological upgrades for match officials, the traditional fabric of cricket is getting a highly anticipated modern refresh.
For cricket purists and global fans eager to witness these new dynamics unfold on the pitch, Sports Live Hub (SLH) delivers the complete, SERP-optimized breakdown of the impending ICC rule changes, the revolutionary integration of red and pink balls, and the best ways to stream the upcoming matches flawlessly.
The proposed regulatory shifts, previously discussed in a recent meeting of the ICC Chief Executives Committee (CEC) featuring Sourav Ganguly, are designed to accelerate the pace of play, integrate advanced technology, and combat weather-related disruptions.
The most significant and visually striking change poised for implementation is the use of different colored match balls within a single Test match. Under the new proposal, teams could mutually decide before the toss to swap the traditional red ball for a pink ball during the five-day game. This adaptation is primarily aimed at combating fading light and weather interruptions. By transitioning to the pink ball—typically reserved for day/night Tests—play can seamlessly continue under floodlights, drastically reducing the number of overs lost to bad light.
In a major technological leap, on-field umpires are set to receive direct access to Hawk-Eye data technology. Currently, the responsibility of identifying and calling illegal bowling actions relies heavily on the TV or the third umpire. Empowering the on-field officials with immediate Hawk-Eye metrics will allow for faster, more accurate in-game decisions to keep bowling actions strictly within the legal parameters.
The ICC is also targeting the white-ball formats to improve match flow and tactical depth:
| Proposed Rule Change | Format Impacted | Key Details & Real Data |
| Multi-Colored Ball Usage | Test Cricket | Teams can mutually agree to switch from a Red ball to a Pink ball to combat bad light. |
| Hawk-Eye for Umpires | All Formats | On-field umpires get direct Hawk-Eye access to instantly check illegal bowling actions. |
| Coaches on the Field | ODIs (50-over) | Head coaches permitted to enter the field during drinks breaks for tactical discussions. |
| Innings Break Reduction | T20 Internationals | Innings break time strictly reduced from 20 minutes to 15 minutes to speed up play. |
| Implementation Date | Global | Target rollout date set for October 1, following the May 30 board meeting in Ahmedabad. |
