Match 65 of the Indian Premier League 2026 will see Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) take on Mumbai Indians (MI) at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on May 20. With the playoff race reaching its climax, KKR will be desperate to secure two crucial points and keep their qualification hopes alive.

The three-time IPL champions endured a horrific start to the season, losing six consecutive matches, but Ajinkya Rahane’s men have scripted a remarkable turnaround by winning five of their last six games. Entering this clash with strong momentum, KKR know this is a must-win encounter to remain mathematically alive in the race for the playoffs.

Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, are already out of playoff contention after a disappointing campaign. The Hardik Pandya-led side currently sit ninth on the points table and will now look to finish their season on a high while potentially playing spoilers to KKR’s qualification hopes.

Predicted Playing XI

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

Top-order: Ajinkya Rahane (capt), Finn Allen (Imp), Angkrish Raghuvanshi

Finn Allen has been KKR’s standout batter in IPL 2026 so far. The explosive New Zealand batter has played the aggressor’s role to perfection at the top of the order, scoring at a brutal strike rate and consistently putting opposition bowlers under pressure during the powerplay.

Ajinkya Rahane has faced criticism for his strike rate against spin in the middle overs, but the veteran skipper deserves immense credit for stabilising the dressing room after KKR’s disastrous start to the season. His leadership has played a massive role in the team’s resurgence.

Young Angkrish Raghuvanshi has emerged as one of the biggest positives for KKR this season. The talented batter has already registered five half-centuries and continues to impress with his maturity and composure at the crease.

Middle-order: Cameron Green, Manish Pandey, Rinku Singh, Sunil Narine, Anukul Roy

Cameron Green adds tremendous balance to the KKR setup with his ability to contribute in multiple departments. The Australian all-rounder has chipped in with valuable runs while also providing crucial overs with the ball whenever needed.

Experienced batter Manish Pandey is expected to play the role of stabiliser in the middle order, especially if KKR lose early wickets. Vice-captain Rinku Singh remains the designated finisher and will once again be entrusted with accelerating in the death overs.

Sunil Narine continues to be KKR’s most reliable defensive bowling option, particularly at Eden Gardens. The veteran spinner’s ability to control the scoring rate in the middle overs remains invaluable. Anukul Roy complements Narine well with his left-arm spin and can also contribute handy runs lower down the order.

Bowlers: Varun Chakaravarthy, Saurabh Dubey, Kartik Tyagi, Blessing Muzarabani

Despite concerns surrounding his fitness, Varun Chakaravarthy is expected to lead KKR’s spin attack. The mystery spinner remains a major wicket-taking threat, especially on the slower surfaces at Eden Gardens.

Left-arm pacer Saurabh Dubey, who joined the squad as an injury replacement earlier in the season, has added variety to the bowling attack. He is likely to share the new-ball responsibilities alongside Kartik Tyagi, whose raw pace has troubled batters throughout the campaign.

Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani is expected to replace Matheesha Pathirana in the XI following the Sri Lankan’s injury setback. His bounce and ability to hit hard lengths could prove crucial against MI’s power-packed batting lineup.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Predicted XI:

Ajinkya Rahane (capt), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (wk), Cameron Green, Manish Pandey, Rinku Singh, Sunil Narine, Anukul Roy, Varun Chakaravarthy, Saurabh Dubey, Kartik Tyagi, Blessing Muzarabani

Impact Player: Finn Allen

Mumbai Indians (MI)

Top-order: Rohit Sharma (Imp), Ryan Rickelton (wk), Naman Dhir

Rohit Sharma is expected to continue opening the innings for Mumbai Indians and remains their biggest batting threat despite the team’s struggles this season. The veteran opener will look to play with complete freedom now that MI are out of playoff contention.

Ryan Rickelton has shown glimpses of brilliance in this IPL season scoring 430 runs. Youngster Naman Dhir has impressed with his fearless batting approach in the middle overs and continues to grow in confidence with every opportunity. He is being backed as a number 3 player.

Middle-order: Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Will Jacks, Hardik Pandya (c)

Suryakumar Yadav has been a total disappointment, still will once again carry the responsibility of controlling the middle overs. His ability to dominate spin and accelerate at will makes him MI’s key player heading into this contest.

Tilak Varma has once again enjoyed a consistent season with the bat and scored a famous century against GT. His composure under pressure has stood out despite MI’s disappointing campaign.

Will Jacks provides additional firepower and flexibility to the batting unit with his aggressive intent against both pace and spin. Captain Hardik Pandya will also look to make impactful contributions with both bat and ball as MI aim to finish their season strongly.

Bowlers: Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, AM Ghazanfar, Jasprit Bumrah, Raghu Sharma

Jasprit Bumrah remains the leader of Mumbai Indians’ bowling attack and continues to be their most reliable wicket-taking option across all phases of the innings. His poor form though, is a sign of concern for this MI side.

Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur are expected to handle the new-ball duties and will look to exploit any early movement available at Eden Gardens.

Young spinner AM Ghazanfar has impressed with his control and wicket-taking ability in the middle overs, while Raghu Sharma adds another spin option to complement the Afghan youngster.

Mumbai Indians (MI) Predicted XI:

Ryan Rickelton (wk), Naman Dhir, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Will Jacks, Hardik Pandya (capt), Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, AM Ghazanfar, Jasprit Bumrah, Raghu Sharma

Impact Player: Rohit Sharma

GT needed this win to protect second place from Sunrisers Hyderabad, who sit level on 16 points but trail by just 0.050 in NRR. CSK needs it to stay mathematically alive. Both sides arrive at Narendra Modi Stadium on May 21 with genuine stakes, just very different ones.
