On July 14, 2023, Yashasvi Jaiswal enjoyed a dream start to his Test career as he marked his debut with a magnificent century against West Indies in the first Test at Windsor Park, Roseau, Dominica. The young left-hander displayed remarkable composure and temperament, scoring a memorable 171 to help India register a dominant innings-and-141-run victory.
After winning the toss, West Indies elected to bat first but found themselves under relentless pressure from India’s experienced spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. The hosts were bundled out for just 150 runs, with debutant Alick Athanaze providing the lone resistance through a fighting 47. Ashwin starred with the ball, claiming 5/60, while Jadeja chipped in with 3/26 as India took complete control of the contest on the opening day.
India’s reply was built around an outstanding opening partnership between captain Rohit Sharma and debutant Jaiswal. Showing tremendous patience and excellent shot selection, Jaiswal looked completely at ease against both pace and spin. He stitched together a 229-run opening stand with Rohit, frustrating the West Indies bowlers throughout the innings.
Jaiswal went on to score a superb 171 off 387 deliveries, an innings laced with 16 boundaries and a six. His knock combined resilience with elegant stroke play, making him only the third Indian opener to score a century on Test debut. Rohit complemented him perfectly with a fluent 103, while Virat Kohli added a composed 76 to ensure India piled on the runs.
Despite West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite rotating as many as nine bowlers in search of breakthroughs, the visitors remained firmly in control. Rahkeem Cornwall briefly looked threatening before a chest infection forced him off the field, further denting the hosts’ hopes. India eventually declared their first innings at 421/5, securing a massive lead of 271 runs.
Asked to bat again, West Indies fared little better in the second innings. Athanaze once again emerged as their top scorer, but the rest of the batting line-up struggled against India’s spinners. Ashwin produced another masterclass, ripping through the batting order with figures of 7/71 to finish the match with 12 wickets. Jadeja provided excellent support with 2/38 as West Indies were bowled out for just 130.
Jaiswal’s outstanding debut century and Ashwin’s 12-wicket match haul proved to be the defining performances as India sealed one of their most comprehensive overseas Test victories. The result also extended India’s unbeaten Test record against West Indies beyond two decades, underlining their dominance over the Caribbean side.
The second Test of the series in Port of Spain ended in a draw after rain washed out the final day’s play, allowing West Indies to avoid a 2-0 whitewash. However, the opening Test will always be remembered for Yashasvi Jaiswal’s sensational introduction to Test cricket, an innings that announced the arrival of one of India’s brightest young batting talents on the biggest stage.
