MLC 2026 Qualifier | LA Knight Riders vs San Francisco Unicorns | Oakland Coliseum, California | 15 July
San Francisco Unicorns walk into Oakland Coliseum on July 15 as the form side, but LA Knight Riders own the head-to-head edge that could decide this Qualifier. SFU finished top of the table behind Lhuan-dre Pretorius’s 447 runs and Matthew Short’s all-round returns, while LAKR climbed to second on the back of Colin Munro and Andre Russell’s twin threat. Both sides face a selection puzzle. Sunil Narine’s fitness remains unresolved for LAKR, and SFU are still adjusting to life without Ravichandran Ashwin’s spin option.
San Francisco Unicorns topped the league stage, with Washington Freedom third and MI New York fourth. LA Knight Riders finished second, setting up a Qualifier where the winner reaches the Final, and the loser gets a second chance in the July 16 Challenger. A poor day here doesn’t end either campaign, but it hands the other side the shorter route to July 18.
Colin Munro is LA’s form batter, following 52 against SFU with 62 versus TSK, striking 46 of LA’s 54 powerplay runs. His 107-run stand with Rovman Powell is now the franchise’s highest T20 fourth-wicket partnership.
Matthew Tromp added 49 against SFU and an unbeaten 58 off 28 balls that won him Player of the Match versus TSK. Andre Russell contributes both ways, 3/42 against SFU and 18 wickets overall, while Holder followed his 4/40 with 3/33 next time out. The open question is Sunil Narine, missing on July 11 against SFU. Holder admitted the side lacked their senior spinner that day, and his Qualifier availability remains unconfirmed.
Lhuan-dre Pretorius leads every run column with 447, including a maiden century, 102 not out against MI New York, and 65 in the final league match. Finn Allen matched that tempo, 65 off 31 balls.
Matthew Short has carried bat and ball all season, 421 runs at a strike rate above 163 alongside 9 wickets at economy 7.18. Xavier Bartlett tops the SFU wicket count with 13, and Haris Rauf offers control, 2/24 against MI New York.
Spin is the bigger worry. Ashwin is out for the season with a knee injury, replaced by Peter Siddle. Short’s off-spin, Immanuel’s wrist spin and Khan’s left-arm option have shared the gap, with Khan also good for 45 against LA.
Neither camp is likely to shuffle much from the last two rounds. LA leans on Munro and Fletcher up top, Tromp and Powell through the middle, and Russell, Holder, van Schalkwyk and Pope with the ball. SFU keeps Pretorius and Allen opening, Short marshalling the middle order, and Bartlett, Siddle and Rauf sharing the new ball.

| 10 | Ali Khan | Pace Bowler | Peter Siddle* | Pace Bowler |
| 11 | Lloyd Pope | Leg-spin Bowler | Haris Rauf | Pace Bowler |
Saif Badar and Ghulam Mudassar fill the domestic quota, and Ali Khan’s pace at the death gives LA a weapon SFU still needs an answer for.
The drop-in surface at Oakland has rewarded batting first all season. Teams batting first averaged 193.6 against 148.2 for chasers, with seven of nine sides clearing 180. SFU hold the ground record here, 269/5 against Washington Freedom.
| Surface | Pace | Bounce | Spin | Expected First-Innings Score |
| Drop-in, true carry | Early new-ball movement | True, occasional early unevenness | Limited turn, short boundaries reward hitters | ~193.6 |
Night games run higher still, around 201 across three fixtures, and short boundaries let a set batter cash in fast. Both captains are expected to bat first if they win the toss. On a ground built for strokeplay, the Los Angeles Knight Riders vs San Francisco Unicorns MLC 2026 playing XI carrying an extra hitter over a specialist bowler is the one built to win this battle.
