Hand-picked stories you can't miss
RR’s last five overs at Wankhede won them this match. Not the powerplay, not the middle overs, the death. After 15 overs of scratching and losing wickets, three batters who weren’t even supposed to feature prominently collected 73 runs in five overs and turned a probable 175 into 205. That 30-run difference was the exact margin by which MI lost. The death overs didn’t just improve RR’s total; they decided the IPL 2026 Playoffs race.
Rajasthan Royals needed this win to reach the IPL 2026 Playoffs, but their first 15 overs gave no indication they’d get there. Yashasvi Jaiswal fell for 27 off 17 balls at the end of the powerplay. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi barely troubled the scorers. Riyan Parag’s stay was brief. Dasun Shanaka made a brisk 29 off 29 before a poor call left him run out, and Dhruv Jurel’s 38 off 26 anchor knock ended when he was yorked in the 13th over.
MI’s spinners worked through the middle overs with control, and by the 15th over, RR were sitting on roughly 132 for 6. A total of 180 looked optimistic. Five overs remained, and RR needed someone to take on a disciplined MI attack.
The phase data tells the story in a way nothing else does.
| Phase | Overs | Runs | Wickets | Run Rate |
| Powerplay | 1–6 | 54 | 3 | 9.00 |
| Middle Overs | 7–15 | 78 | 4 | 8.67 |
| Death Overs | 16–20 | 73 | 1 (+run out) | 14.60 |
RR scored 73 runs in five overs for 1 wicket, a death-overs run rate of 14.60. The Powerplay and middle phases contributed at 9.00 and 8.67, respectively. That acceleration in the final five overs is what separated a forgettable total from a match-winning one.
Jofra Archer wasn’t expected at the crease when he walked in. Brought in as an impact player substitution, he said as much himself: “I wasn’t expecting to bat so early.” It didn’t show. He launched into MI’s attack with three sixes and a four, finishing with 32 off 15 balls at a strike rate of 213.33 before Shardul Thakur found the edge, caught by Tilak Varma in the 19th over.
Ravindra Jadeja entered as an impact sub at over 17.4 and collected 19 off 7 balls, hitting back-to-back fours off Thakur in the final over. Nandre Burger stayed unbeaten for 10 off 3. Their combined 30 runs off the last two overs pushed RR past 200.
Mumbai Indians needed 206 on a Wankhede pitch that was sitting slightly slow for a day game. Archer, now with the ball, removed Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir early. Suryakumar Yadav (60 off 43) and Will Jacks (33 off 18) rebuilt before the middle order caved. Archer returned to dismiss Hardik Pandya for 34 off 15 when MI needed 59 off 30. Burger then took a return catch to send back Suryakumar, and MI folded for 175/9, 30 runs short. Archer finished with 3/17 with the ball. He was the Player of the Match, and it wasn’t close.
RR’s win confirmed their place as the fourth and final team in the IPL 2026 Playoffs with 16 points. They face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator on May 27 in Mullanpur.
