Namibia and South Africa will renew their battle in the second ODI of the three-match series at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek on Friday, September 11. The Proteas currently lead the series 1-0 after securing a convincing 99-run victory in the rain-affected first ODI.
South Africa produced an impressive all-round display in the series opener, posting 348 before Namibia were restricted to 162/8 in 31 overs. Prenelan Subrayen was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Jordan Hermann announced himself in spectacular fashion by smashing 150 on ODI debut. Namibia, however, have already shown during the preceding T20I series that they can trouble the Proteas, including an 18-run victory over them.
1. Jordan Hermann vs Ruben Trumpelmann
One of the most fascinating contests will take place at the very beginning of South Africa’s innings, with Jordan Hermann likely to face Namibia’s premier new-ball bowler, Ruben Trumpelmann.
Hermann could hardly have asked for a better ODI debut. The left-hander smashed a sensational 150 in the first game, providing the foundation for South Africa’s mammoth total. His ability to combine controlled strokeplay with aggressive hitting made him the standout performer of the match.
Trumpelmann, meanwhile, will be desperate to prevent Hermann from producing another dominant innings. The left-arm pacer has the ability to swing the new ball and attack the stumps, while his angle can create problems for right- and left-handed batters alike.
The Windhoek conditions could add another layer to this contest. The Namibia Cricket Ground is situated at considerable altitude, with the ball generally travelling well once batters get set, although the new ball can offer assistance early in the morning.
If Trumpelmann can dismiss Hermann early, Namibia will immediately put pressure on South Africa’s batting lineup. If Hermann survives, another big score could be on the cards.
2. Louren Steenkamp vs Prenelan Subrayen
Louren Steenkamp will be one of Namibia’s key hopes at the top of the order, but he faces a difficult challenge against South Africa’s impressive spinner Prenelan Subrayen.
Steenkamp has shown encouraging form against the Proteas in recent weeks. He scored 61 in the second T20I between the sides and has been one of Namibia’s more dependable top-order batters. The left-hander will therefore be expected to provide the hosts with a solid platform in the second ODI.
Subrayen, however, was outstanding in the opening ODI. The off-spinner claimed 4/29 and repeatedly found ways to trouble Namibia’s batters during the middle overs. His accuracy and ability to extract subtle turns make him a particularly difficult opponent for batters looking to attack spin.
This battle could be especially important because Steenkamp will have to balance his natural attacking instincts with the need to build a substantial ODI innings. Subrayen, meanwhile, will look to keep him tied down and force a mistake.
If Steenkamp wins this battle, Namibia could build the type of competitive total they need. If Subrayen strikes again, South Africa could gain control of the innings early.
3. Gerhard Erasmus vs Corbin Bosch
The contest between Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus and South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch could have a major influence on the middle overs.
Erasmus remains the heartbeat of the Namibian side. The experienced all-rounder is responsible for anchoring the innings while also providing valuable overs with his off-spin. Namibia will need a significant contribution from their captain if they are to challenge a South African side boasting considerable batting depth.
Bosch, on the other hand, has emerged as an important component of South Africa’s balanced XI. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a genuine match-winner. He has also been identified as one of the key South African players to watch in the second ODI.
The battle becomes particularly interesting when Bosch bowls to Erasmus. Namibia’s captain will need to find scoring opportunities without giving his wicket away, while Bosch will look to use changes of pace and disciplined lengths to restrict him.
At the same time, Erasmus could potentially be tasked with bowling to Bosch later in the innings. That makes this a battle that could extend beyond a single phase of the game.
