On this day in 1985, Ravi Bopara was born in Forest Gate, London. Over the years, Bopara carved out a reputation as a versatile cricketer, representing England across all formats while also enjoying a long and successful domestic and franchise career. Initially known as a top-order batter, he gradually developed into a reliable medium-pace bowler, making him a valuable batting all-rounder, particularly in limited-overs cricket.

Bopara featured for several T20 franchises around the world, including Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League, Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab) in the Indian Premier League, Sydney Sixers in Australia’s Big Bash League, and Chittagong Vikings in the Bangladesh Premier League. One of the highlights of his international career came when he was part of England’s squad that lifted the ICC World Twenty20 2010 title, marking a significant achievement for English cricket.

His international journey began in 2007 when he earned his maiden One Day International call-up. He made his debut as a replacement for the injured Kevin Pietersen during a series against Australia. Soon after, Bopara was included in England’s squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, where he showed glimpses of his potential. In a memorable game against Sri Lanka, he scored a fighting 52 off 53 balls and earned the Player of the Match award, nearly guiding England to an unlikely victory. During that tournament, he also shared a record partnership with Paul Collingwood against Canada.

Bopara made his Test debut later in 2007 on the tour of Sri Lanka, but it proved to be a challenging start. He managed only 42 runs across five innings, including three ducks, and picked up just one wicket. Despite the tough beginning, he returned strongly in the 2008-09 series against the West Indies, where he achieved a remarkable feat by becoming only the fifth England batter to score three consecutive Test centuries. However, inconsistency continued to trouble him, and he struggled during the Ashes 2009, eventually losing his place in the side.

In domestic cricket, Bopara remained a key figure. He played a significant role for Essex and later took over the captaincy of their one-day side at the start of the 2016 season. His leadership and experience proved valuable for the team. Over time, he also became a regular presence in England’s limited-overs setup, often batting in the middle order and contributing with the ball when needed.

Bopara’s career also saw a few turning points. In 2011, he declined a lucrative IPL offer worth £100,000 from Delhi Daredevils as a replacement for the injured Collingwood. Around the same time, he was in contention to secure a permanent Test spot following Collingwood’s retirement, competing closely with Eoin Morgan. Despite strong performances in county cricket, he couldn’t cement his place in the Test side.

He returned to the national setup for the ICC Champions Trophy 2013, this time as a middle-order batter. Across his international career, Bopara scored 575 runs in 13 Tests, 2,695 runs in 120 ODIs, and 711 runs in 38 T20Is. In domestic cricket, he amassed over 12,000 first-class runs and more than 9,000 runs in List A cricket, underlining his longevity and consistency in the game.

Why Punjab Kings Lost to Delhi Capitals in the 55th Match of IPL 2026: 3 Key Reasons

Punjab Kings posted 210/5 at Dharamsala. Delhi Capitals chased it in 19 overs. The final margin was three wickets and six balls remaining. PBKS reduced DC to 33/3, then 74/4, and still lost. Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten 59 and Priyansh Arya’s 24-ball fifty built a platform that should have been enough. It wasn’t, because Axar Patel’s 56 off 30 balls reversed the match at its most critical moment, and 17 wides gifted Delhi 17 deliveries they shouldn’t have received in a chase won with an over to spare.

What KKR’s Playing XI for IPL 2026 Match 57 Reveals About Their Raipur Spin Trap for RCB

Kolkata Knight Riders arrive at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur with a playing XI designed around one specific insight: this venue rewards smart cricket over spectacular cricket. Large boundaries reduce the value of aerial hitting. The black-soil surface slows through the innings and assists spin. KKR have selected accordingly, with Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine controlling the middle overs, Cameron Green covering two phases simultaneously, and Finn Allen delivering the explosive powerplay start the total needs before conditions tighten.

Why Mumbai Indians Lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 54th Match of IPL 2026: 3 Key Reasons

Mumbai Indians had RCB at 39/3 and needed 127 from that position to defend 166. They didn’t get it. Krunal Pandya’s 73 off 46 balls, 11 wides, a no-ball, and a bowling unit that lost discipline precisely when the match demanded the opposite combined to hand Royal Challengers Bengaluru a two-wicket win off the final ball at Raipur. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 4/23 in the first innings and Jasprit Bumrah’s 20-run economy across four overs weren’t enough. Three specific failures explain why.
