Sri Lankan cricket has produced some of the finest fast bowlers the game has seen, but it has also produced a long list of quicks whose careers were interrupted by injury, timing or circumstance. Dhammika Prasad belongs firmly in that category. Born on May 30, 1983, in Ragama, Prasad’s international record only tells part of the story. Those who watched him at his best remember a bowler capable of genuine pace, sharp movement and the kind of hostility Sri Lanka had often struggled to generate from its seam attack.
Prasad’s journey to the national side was anything but straightforward. He emerged through Sri Lanka’s domestic system as a fast-medium bowler with an aggressive approach and quickly built a reputation for troubling batters with bounce and late seam movement. International opportunities arrived sporadically, and injuries ensured continuity remained elusive throughout his career.
He made his ODI debut in 2006 and his Test debut against India in Colombo in 2008. Even in that first Test, there were flashes of the qualities that made him such an intriguing prospect. Bowling with energy and conviction, he dismissed Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar during a memorable spell that immediately announced his arrival on the biggest stage.
Yet the years that followed were frustrating. Fitness concerns repeatedly interrupted his progress. While Sri Lanka enjoyed success through the brilliance of Muttiah Muralitharan and later Rangana Herath, Prasad found himself battling for rhythm, selection and physical fitness.
His finest period came much later. The 2014 tour of England remains one of the most significant chapters in Sri Lankan Test history, and Prasad was at the heart of it. At Headingley, with the series level and England chasing 350, he produced one of the defining spells of his career. His figures of 5 for 90 helped secure Sri Lanka’s first-ever Test series victory on English soil. The image of Prasad running in relentlessly as wickets fell around him remains one of the enduring memories of that landmark triumph.
If Headingley elevated his reputation, 2015 became the year he finally established himself as Sri Lanka’s leading fast bowler. He claimed 41 Test wickets during the calendar year and was among the most productive pace bowlers in world cricket. His performances against Pakistan and India stood out, particularly during India’s tour of Sri Lanka, where he repeatedly challenged a powerful batting line-up with pace and movement.
Prasad finished his international career with 75 wickets in 25 Tests and 32 wickets in 24 ODIs. Those numbers may not place him alongside Sri Lanka’s all-time greats, but they scarcely capture his impact when fully fit. He brought an edge to Sri Lanka’s attack, a willingness to attack the stumps and challenge batters physically.
In many ways, his career is remembered as much for what might have been as for what was. Injuries prevented him from building sustained momentum, and just as he appeared to be reaching his peak, his body began to fail him again.
Still, on his day, Dhammika Prasad was exactly the kind of fast bowler every captain wants: wholehearted, fearless and endlessly committed. For a brief but memorable period, he carried Sri Lanka’s pace attack and delivered some of the most important spells of his country’s modern Test history.
