June 22, 1996, remains one of the most significant dates in Indian cricket history. At Lord’s, the game’s most storied venue, Sourav Ganguly completed a magnificent century on Test debut against England, turning a long-awaited opportunity into an innings that would define the beginning of an extraordinary international career. Almost five years had passed since his one-day international debut in 1992, and there were moments when a Test career seemed increasingly unlikely. When the chance finally arrived, Ganguly made it count in emphatic fashion.
India were responding to England’s first-innings total of 344, built largely around a superb 124 from wicketkeeper Jack Russell. His innings was notable for more than the runs alone. Russell became the first England wicketkeeper in 44 years to score a Test century at Lord’s, producing an effort of immense concentration and value. Yet, despite the quality of that knock, history would remember the match more for what unfolded in India’s reply.
Ganguly walked in at No. 3 and immediately looked at ease. His driving through the off side was elegant without being extravagant, and he showed a composure that belied his inexperience. He batted for more than seven hours, faced 301 deliveries and struck 20 boundaries in a finely crafted innings of 131. The century placed his name on the Lord’s honours board and made him only the third player to score a hundred on Test debut at the ground. It was an innings built on patience, judgment and technical assurance rather than risk.
Alongside him was another debutant who would go on to become one of the finest batters of his generation. Rahul Dravid compiled a disciplined 95 and shared a crucial partnership with Ganguly that helped India take control of the match. For a brief period, cricket stood on the brink of a unique landmark. No Test match had ever witnessed two debutants from the same side scoring centuries in the same innings. Dravid came agonisingly close, only to fall five runs short when he was caught by Jack Russell off Chris Lewis. Russell’s catch ensured that the record remained unattained.
The match was also the final Test appearance of one of cricket’s most beloved umpires. Dickie Bird stood in the 66th and last Test of his distinguished career. Before play began, both teams formed a guard of honour as he walked onto the field at Lord’s. The reception moved him visibly, but sentiment lasted only a few moments. In a wonderfully ironic twist, Bird raised his finger to dismiss England captain Mike Atherton lbw for nought from the fifth ball of the match. Bird had long carried a reputation for being reluctant to give lbw decisions, making the moment all the more memorable.
Neither side could force a result and the match ended in a draw, but its legacy has endured. Russell’s century, Dravid’s near miss and Bird’s farewell all formed important chapters. Yet the enduring image remains Ganguly, bat raised at Lord’s, announcing himself to Test cricket with an innings that signalled the arrival of a future captain and one of India’s defining cricketers.
