On this day in 1980, Harbhajan Singh was born in Jalandhar, Punjab. Widely regarded as one of India’s greatest off-spinners, Harbhajan enjoyed an illustrious international career spanning nearly two decades and played a pivotal role in several of Indian cricket’s most memorable triumphs. He was a key member of the squads that won the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the 2011 Cricket World Cup, and shared the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy title with Sri Lanka.
Harbhajan emerged as one of the finest finger spinners of his generation during an era dominated by wrist spinners, flatter pitches, and increasingly aggressive batting. Renowned for his clever variations in pace, flight, and length, he also developed the ability to spin the ball both ways, making him a constant threat across formats.
The defining moment of his career came during the historic 2001 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. With the visitors arriving unbeaten in 16 consecutive Tests, Harbhajan spearheaded India’s remarkable comeback by claiming 32 wickets in just three matches. During the Kolkata Test, he became the first Indian bowler to claim a Test hat-trick, while no other Indian bowler managed more than three wickets in the series. His dominance over Ricky Ponting was particularly striking, dismissing the Australian captain five times for scores below 12 in the series.
However, his rivalry with Australia also produced one of cricket’s most controversial moments. During the 2008 Sydney Test, Harbhajan was accused of racially abusing Andrew Symonds. The charge was later reduced to abusive language on appeal. Ironically, the two later became teammates at Mumbai Indians, where they developed a strong friendship. Harbhajan represented Mumbai Indians from 2008 to 2017 and captained the franchise in 20 IPL matches. He later turned out for Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders.
In Test cricket, Harbhajan formed one of India’s most successful spin partnerships alongside Anil Kumble. Together, the duo claimed 366 wickets in just 34 Tests, helping India establish a formidable home record. Until Ravichandran Ashwin surpassed him in 2021, Harbhajan held the record as India’s highest wicket-taking off-spinner in Test cricket.
Across his international career, Harbhajan played 103 Tests, taking 417 wickets, alongside 269 wickets in 236 ODIs and 25 wickets in 28 T20Is. He also made valuable contributions with the bat, scoring 2,224 Test runs and 1,237 ODI runs, cementing his legacy as one of India’s finest all-round cricketing performers.
