A left-arm seamer with a smooth action, who could bowl with pace and accuracy in all phases of the innings, Wayne Parnell established himself as a regular across formats for South Africa and around the T20 franchise circuit. He broke out as a talented left-arm speedster before injuries and form impacted his ability to reach the lofty heights of his potential. He has played 145 matches across formats for the Proteas and picked up 173 wickets, and has been a threat with the ball whenever called upon. 

Parnell made his first-class debut in October 2006 for Eastern Province and made headlines after picking up figures of 4 for 7 in his second match and picking up a hat-trick in his second game. This form prompted him to be named in the South Africa squad for the 2006 U-19 World Cup. Parnell went on to captain the Proteas in the 2008 edition of the tournament, and finished as the leading wicket-taker, with 18 wickets at 8.38. In the quarter-final against Bangladesh, he took figures of six for eight as well as top-scoring with 57, a highlight of his prowess with the bat.

He made his debut with the senior side in a T20I against Australia in Brisbane in January 2009, and established himself as a regular, becoming the youngest player to be handed a Cricket South Africa national contract. Parnell picked up nine wickets in the 2009 T20 World Cup and bowled with brilliant control, picking up best figures of 4 for 13 against the West Indies. He picked up 11 wickets in the 2009 Champiosn Trophy and was awarded the ‘Golden Ball’ to signify his status as the leading wicket-taker in the tournament. 

He earned a lucrative IPL deal in 2010 with the now-defunct Delhi Daredevils, but was unable to take part in the season due to a groin injury. This began a string of significant injuries for the player, which hampered his career progression. Parnell played just one match in the 2011 Cricket World Cup and was part of the squad for the 2012 World T20.

A successful County stint in 2009 saw Parnell handed a Test debut against England in 2010, and he made three of his six Test appearances in that year. He made a return to the Test side after a stellar domestic season in 2014 against Australia, but hobbled off after bowling just eight overs.

Parnell finally rescinded his South Africa commitments to sign a three-year Kolpak deal with Worcestershire in 2018. He was a regular feature for the now-defunct Pune Warriors India from 2011 to 2013 before returning to the Daredevils in 2014. He also played for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2023, signed as a replacement for England left-arm seamer Reece Topley. He has played 307 T20 matches, scoring 2316 runs and picking up 323 wickets, a reflection of his value as an all-rounder.
