Attacking stroke-play, destructive batting and shots all around the ground, Jason Roy was regarded as one of the pillars of England’s white-ball resurgence, playing a key role in the Three Lions’ triumph in the 2019 World Cup at home. Eoin Morgan’s side has often, although debatably, been credited with a revolution in the 50-over format with their batting and bowling template, and Roy was one of the vital cogs in that well-oiled machine. In an international career that spanned eight years, Roy is fondly remembered as an architect in many famous wins for England in white-ball cricket, a void which the team have yet to fill, especially in the 50-over format.
Moving to England from South Africa aged 10, Roy made his professional debut for Surrey in 2008, aged just 18. While he spent two years on the fringes, it was in 2010 that he broke out, scoring three consecutive centuries in the County Championship against Essex, Sussex and Durham, respectively. He developed a penchant for scoring runs quickly, while also taking the attack to the bowlers.
An England ODI debut came in 2015, as part of a major shakeup to the side following their dismal World Cup campaign in Australia. It took roy seven games to score his first ODI century against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, which cemented his place in the side, regularly featuring in the T20 team as well.
The 2016 T20 World Cup campaign saw Roy further stake his claim at the top of the order, scoring 183 runs in six matches as the English team were pipped in the final by the West Indies. He scored a 16-ball 43 against South Africa as England chased down 230 at the Wankhede Stadium, and scored a brilliant 78 against tournament favourites New Zealand at the Eden Gardens.
While 2017 was a lean year for Roy, he kicked off 2018 smashing a stellar 180 against Australia in Melbourne, breaking Alex Hales’ record for the highest ODI score by an English batter in the year. He followed it up with two more centuries against the Aussies in Cardiff and Chester-le-Street, with his destructive partnership with Jonny Bairstow evolving into the team’s backbone as the 2019 World Cup approached.
Roy played a key role in England’s first-ever ODI World Cup triumph, scoring 443 runs in seven innings. Roy averaged 63.28 and struck at a brilliant 115.36, recording four half-centuries, including a match-winning 85 against Australia in the semifinal and a stunning 153 against Bangladesh. Patchy form followed in the later years, and he missed England’s victorious 2022 T20 World Cup with an injury. He was named in the provisional squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup, but was unable to make the cut after missing the series against New Zealand with back spasms, prompting Harry Brook’s inclusion in the squad as cover, and Dawid Malan taking his place as the opener.
Despite the unprecedented ending to his international career, Roy is fondly remembered as a revolutionary with the bat, prompting England to play an exciting brand of cricket, which saw them undo the demons of 2015 and become one of the strongest white-ball dynasties in cricket.
