On this day in 2010, Deandra Dottin etched her name into cricket history with a breathtaking performance that transformed the women’s game. Representing the West Indies women’s cricket team, Dottin became the first woman ever to score a century in Women’s Twenty20 Internationals (WT20Is). Her remarkable innings came during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2010 against South Africa women’s cricket team in St Kitts.
Walking in at number six, Dottin produced an innings of sheer power and dominance. She smashed an unbeaten 112 runs off just 45 balls, reaching her century in only 38 deliveries. This made it not only the first hundred in women’s T20Is but also the fastest in the format at the time, men’s or women’s, surpassing the previous benchmark set by Chris Gayle, who had scored a T20I century off 50 balls in 2007, coincidentally also against South Africa.
Dottin’s innings was a masterclass in aggressive batting. She struck nine towering sixes and five boundaries, dismantling the South African bowling attack with ease. Her acceleration was particularly astonishing in the latter half of the innings, where she brought up her second fifty in just 13 balls. The dominance she displayed was reflected in her staggering strike rate of 248.88, a figure rarely seen in international cricket.
Her partnership with Shanel Daley proved equally crucial. The duo added 118 runs for the fifth wicket, setting a new record for the highest fifth-wicket partnership for West Indies Women in WT20Is, surpassing the previous best of 57 set by Pamela Lavine and Veronica King. Dottin also rewrote multiple individual records in that innings, including most runs scored in boundaries (82) for West Indies Women in WT20Is, overtaking Stafanie Taylor’s previous mark of 60. Additionally, she set a new benchmark for most sixes by a West Indies woman in T20Is, going past King’s earlier record.
West Indies Women posted a formidable total of 175/5 in their allotted 20 overs. In response, South Africa Women fought valiantly but fell short, finishing at 158/4. Shandre Fritz top-scored with a steady 58 off 52 balls, while captain Cri-zelda Brits contributed 43 runs. Despite their efforts, the target proved too steep, thanks largely to Dottin’s extraordinary innings.
With the ball, Chloe Tryon was the pick of the South African bowlers, claiming 2 wickets for 28 runs, while Charlize van der Westhuizen and Angelique Taai chipped in with one wicket each. Overall, in 144 T20Is she has scored 3094 runs at an average of 26.67 including two centuries and 14 fifties.
This match marked a defining moment in women’s cricket, showcasing the explosive potential of the format. Dottin’s innings not only secured West Indies’ first win of the tournament but also set a new standard for power-hitting in the women’s game. Although West Indies would later exit the tournament in the semi-finals against New Zealand women’s cricket team, Dottin’s unforgettable knock remains one of the most iconic performances in cricket history.
