May 29, 2023 remains one of the most memorable nights in the history of the Indian Premier League, not merely because Chennai Super Kings won their fifth title, but because the manner of the victory captured everything the franchise has represented for more than a decade. In a final interrupted repeatedly by rain, stretched across two days and played under enormous pressure, Chennai found a way through familiar qualities of composure, experience and clarity to defeat Gujarat Titans by five wickets in Ahmedabad and equal Mumbai Indians’ record of five IPL championships.
The final at the Narendra Modi Stadium began on May 28 but relentless rain ensured that not a ball could be bowled. The contest eventually resumed on the reserve day in front of another packed crowd, with Gujarat Titans, the defending champions, once again displaying the authority that had defined their campaign throughout the season. Asked to bat first, Gujarat produced 214 for 4 from their 20 overs, driven by an outstanding innings from Sai Sudharsan, whose 96 from 47 deliveries combined timing, placement and fearless strokeplay of the highest quality. Wriddhiman Saha gave Gujarat momentum during the Powerplay, while Hardik Pandya’s unbeaten contribution at the end ensured Chennai were left with a target that had never been successfully chased in an IPL final.
For Chennai, the challenge became even more complicated when rain interrupted the chase shortly after the innings had begun. Under the DLS method, the revised equation left them requiring 171 runs from 15 overs. Although the target demanded immediate aggression, Chennai approached the chase with remarkable calmness. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway provided exactly the start required, attacking Gujarat’s seamers and refusing to allow the asking rate to become unmanageable. Conway, in particular, played with excellent control through the off side and struck 47 from 25 balls before Noor Ahmad briefly pulled Gujarat back into the contest.
Ajinkya Rahane maintained the tempo with another fluent contribution during a season in which he had rediscovered his white-ball game, while Shivam Dube played an innings of immense value despite not always finding the middle of the bat consistently. Dube understood the situation perfectly and resisted the temptation to overhit against Gujarat’s spinners, ensuring Chennai remained within reach of the target deep into the chase.
Even then, Gujarat appeared favourites entering the final over. Mohit Sharma, who had enjoyed an exceptional comeback season and had been among the tournament’s best death bowlers, conceded only three runs from the first four deliveries while also dismissing Ambati Rayudu. Chennai suddenly required 10 runs from two balls, a situation that seemed beyond recovery even in a format known for improbable finishes.
Ravindra Jadeja changed the game within moments. He struck Mohit over fine leg for six from the fifth delivery before guiding the final ball past short fine leg for four, sealing one of the most dramatic victories the tournament has witnessed. As Jadeja celebrated near the pitch, MS Dhoni remained in the background briefly before his teammates surrounded him, a familiar image from Chennai’s most successful years.
The 2023 title carried significance beyond the result itself. Dhoni had played the entire season managing a knee injury and there had been constant speculation surrounding his future. Yet Chennai once again demonstrated the strength of a side built on defined roles, experienced leadership and trust in players during pressure situations. Matheesha Pathirana emerged as a major force with the ball, Conway delivered consistency throughout the season, Gaikwad remained reliable at the top and Jadeja produced one of the defining moments in IPL history when it mattered most.
For Chennai Super Kings, the triumph in Ahmedabad was not simply another championship. It was confirmation that even in a tournament increasingly shaped by change, few teams have understood high-pressure cricket as completely or sustained excellence as consistently as they have under Dhoni’s leadership.
