Namibia will aim to level the five-match ODI series when they take on Ireland in the second match at the High Performance Oval in Windhoek on October 24, 2026. The hosts suffered a 55-run defeat in the opening ODI and will need a stronger performance with both bat and ball to challenge the visitors.
Ireland posted 229 runs in the first match before bowling Namibia out for 174. The result highlighted the difference between the two sides in handling pressure, with Namibia struggling to build substantial partnerships during the chase. Captain Gerhard Erasmus will be keen to address those shortcomings and help his team make better use of home conditions.
Namibia have several experienced campaigners in their squad, including Michael van Lingen, Jan Frylinck, Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton and Erasmus himself. Their bowling attack, featuring Ruben Trumpelmann, Bernard Scholtz and Jack Brassell, also has the potential to trouble Ireland if it maintains discipline and strikes at regular intervals.
With the series still in its early stages, Namibia could retain the core of their opening-match combination while considering minor adjustments to improve their batting depth and bowling balance.
Michael van Lingen is expected to open the innings and provide Namibia with a solid start. The left-handed batter will be crucial in negotiating Ireland’s new-ball attack, particularly during the powerplay when the visitors will look to exploit any early movement.
Van Lingen needs to build a partnership at the top rather than allow Ireland to take control through quick wickets. His ability to rotate the strike and find boundaries could help Namibia establish a platform for the middle order.
Louren Steenkamp is likely to partner van Lingen at the top of the order. The batter will have an important role in providing stability and ensuring Namibia do not fall behind the required scoring rate during the initial overs.
Steenkamp’s ability to build an innings could prove valuable after Namibia’s disappointing performance in the first ODI. A substantial opening partnership would reduce the pressure on the middle order and give the hosts a better chance of posting a competitive total.
Jan Frylinck is expected to feature in the top order as a batting all-rounder. His experience and ability to contribute in multiple departments make him an important member of Namibia’s setup.
Frylinck will need to play according to the match situation, particularly if Ireland manage to remove one of the openers early. He can help rebuild the innings while also accelerating when the opportunity arises.
Captain Gerhard Erasmus will be Namibia’s key batter in the middle order. His experience and understanding of local conditions make him central to the team’s plans against Ireland.
Erasmus will need to lead from the front after the hosts were dismissed for 174 in the opening match. His ability to construct an innings, rotate the strike and attack loose deliveries could determine whether Namibia can challenge Ireland’s bowling attack.
Zane Green is expected to retain the wicketkeeping responsibilities and provide stability in the middle order. His role will become especially important if Namibia lose early wickets and need someone to anchor the innings.
Green can build partnerships with Erasmus and the lower-order batters while ensuring the scoring rate remains competitive. Behind the stumps, he will also need to remain alert against Ireland’s attacking batters.
Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton is likely to feature in the middle order, offering Namibia an aggressive batting option. His ability to accelerate could be particularly valuable during the latter stages of the innings.
Namibia need their middle-order batters to convert promising starts into meaningful contributions. Loftie-Eaton will be expected to support Erasmus while looking for opportunities to increase the scoring rate against Ireland’s spinners and seamers.
JJ Smit is expected to provide balance as a bowling all-rounder. His presence strengthens Namibia’s lower-order batting while giving Erasmus another option with the ball.
Smit’s contribution could be important in a contest where Namibia need to improve their performance in both departments. He will be expected to contribute useful runs and provide breakthroughs whenever his bowling is called upon.
Ruben Trumpelmann is likely to lead Namibia’s pace attack. The left-arm fast bowler can trouble batters with his angle and ability to generate movement, making him a potential threat with the new ball.
Trumpelmann will need to strike early against Ireland’s experienced top order. If he can remove key batters during the powerplay, Namibia could prevent the visitors from establishing another strong platform.
Waldo Smith is expected to retain his place as a bowling option in Namibia’s attack. His role will be to maintain pressure through disciplined spells and support the frontline seamers.
Against Ireland, controlling the flow of runs will be just as important as taking wickets. Smith will need to avoid offering scoring opportunities and help Namibia build pressure during the middle overs.
Jack Brassell could continue as part of Namibia’s pace-bowling combination. His ability to bowl hard lengths and challenge batters will be useful against an Irish lineup looking to build momentum.
Brassell will be expected to complement Trumpelmann by providing control and creating wicket-taking opportunities. Namibia’s chances of defending a competitive total could depend on how effectively their pacers manage the powerplay and death overs.
Bernard Scholtz is likely to complete Namibia’s bowling attack as an experienced left-arm spinner. His control and ability to operate during the middle overs could help the hosts restrict Ireland’s scoring rate.
Scholtz will be particularly important if the pitch offers assistance to spin. By keeping the batters quiet and building pressure, he could create opportunities for Namibia’s seamers to strike at the other end.
