Zimbabwe will look to bounce back in the second T20I against Afghanistan after losing the opening match at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Captain Sikandar Raza’s side has an opportunity to level the three-match series, but the visitors will need a more disciplined batting performance to challenge Afghanistan’s formidable bowling attack.
The biggest concern for Zimbabwe was their inability to build partnerships during the chase. Ryan Burl top-scored with 32, while Innocent Kaia contributed 24, but the team was eventually bowled out for 140 in 19.1 overs. Afghanistan’s spinners and pace bowlers combined effectively to defend their total.
Zimbabwe could make a change to their bowling attack for the second match, with experienced pacer Blessing Muzarabani available after missing the series opener.
Here is Zimbabwe’s Predicted XI for 2nd T20I:
Brian Bennett is expected to retain his place at the top of the order. He scored 13 runs in the opening match but was unable to convert his start into a substantial innings. Zimbabwe will need him to show greater intent while remaining patient against Afghanistan’s new-ball bowlers.
Bennett’s ability to rotate the strike and find gaps will be important in the powerplay. A solid start from the young batter could help Zimbabwe avoid losing wickets early.
Ben Curran is likely to continue as Bennett’s opening partner. He managed seven runs in the first T20I before falling to Fazalhaq Farooqi. The left-hander will aim to improve his performance and establish a stronger partnership at the top.
Curran will need to handle Afghanistan’s swing bowling carefully before attempting to accelerate. If he can stay at the crease through the initial overs, he could provide the platform Zimbabwe require.
Innocent Kaia could retain his position at number three after scoring 24 off 26 deliveries in the series opener. His innings provided some stability, although he was unable to convert it into a bigger contribution.
Kaia’s role will be to anchor the innings if Zimbabwe lose an early wicket. He will also need to find a better balance between rotating the strike and scoring boundaries to prevent the required run rate from climbing.
Captain Sikandar Raza remains Zimbabwe’s most important all-rounder and will be expected to lead from the front. He scored 17 in the first T20I before falling to Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Raza’s experience against spin could prove valuable against Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad. His off-spin also gives Zimbabwe an additional bowling option, allowing him to manage the attack according to match conditions.
Ryan Burl is likely to occupy the middle order after top-scoring for Zimbabwe with 32 runs in the opening match. He struck two sixes and attempted to accelerate the chase, but his dismissal left the team struggling to keep pace.
Burl will be crucial in the second T20I because of his ability to attack spin and clear the boundary. Zimbabwe will hope he can turn a promising start into a match-defining innings.
Wessly Madhevere is expected to retain his place after scoring 17 off eight deliveries in the first match. His aggressive approach briefly raised Zimbabwe’s scoring rate, demonstrating his ability to contribute quick runs in the middle order.
Madhevere will need to choose his attacking options carefully against Afghanistan’s varied bowling attack. His ability to accelerate without losing his wicket could be important during the latter stages of the innings.
Tadiwanashe Marumani is likely to continue as wicketkeeper and provide batting depth. He scored seven runs in the series opener and will be keen to make a greater impact with the bat.
His role will be particularly important if Zimbabwe lose wickets during the middle overs. Marumani will need to support the finishers while maintaining pressure on Afghanistan’s bowlers.
Brad Evans could retain his place as a pace-bowling all-rounder. He claimed two wickets in the first T20I, although he managed only four runs with the bat.
Evans will be expected to provide breakthroughs and deliver useful overs at the death. His ability to contribute in both departments makes him an important part of Zimbabwe’s balance.
Wellington Masakadza is likely to remain in the XI as a specialist left-arm spinner. He dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the opening match and showed that he could trouble Afghanistan’s batters.
His task will be to maintain control during the middle overs and prevent Afghanistan from accelerating freely. Masakadza could be particularly effective if he varies his pace and uses the conditions intelligently.
Newman Nyamhuri was Zimbabwe’s standout bowler in the first T20I, claiming four wickets. His performance was a major positive despite the team’s defeat, and he is expected to retain his place.
Nyamhuri will look to repeat that disciplined performance and challenge Afghanistan’s aggressive middle order. Early wickets from the left-arm seamer could help Zimbabwe restrict the hosts to a manageable total.
Blessing Muzarabani could return to the playing XI to strengthen Zimbabwe’s pace attack. His height, bounce and ability to extract movement make him a valuable option against Afghanistan’s top order.
If selected, he could replace Ernest Masuku, who played in the opening match. Muzarabani’s experience would give Raza another frontline pace option, particularly during the powerplay and death overs.
