South Africa will look to seal the three-match ODI series when they face Namibia in the second ODI at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek on Friday, September 11. The Proteas registered a comfortable 99-run victory via the DLS method in the series opener and will enter the second game with plenty of confidence.
The young South African side produced an impressive all-round performance in the first ODI. Jordan Hermann stole the show on debut with a sensational 150, while Tony de Zorzi contributed a fluent 72. Prenelan Subrayen then returned outstanding figures of 4/29 as Namibia were restricted to 162/8 in 31 overs.
With most of the squad performing well, Bjorn Fortuin is unlikely to make too many changes for the second ODI.
Jordan Hermann is an automatic selection after his sensational ODI debut. The left-hander smashed 150 off 126 balls, including 17 fours and three sixes, and played a major role in South Africa posting 348/6.
His innings was particularly impressive considering it was his first appearance in the format. Hermann will be eager to carry that momentum into the second game and establish himself as a dependable option at the top of the order.
Connor Esterhuizen is likely to retain his place at the top of the order and behind the stumps. The youngster had a relatively quiet outing in the first ODI, scoring 10 off 19 balls.
However, South Africa are expected to give him another opportunity rather than make an unnecessary change after a comprehensive victory. His wicketkeeping also provides balance to the XI.
Tony de Zorzi looked comfortable in the series opener, scoring 72 off 84 deliveries. His partnership with Hermann was instrumental in taking South Africa towards a commanding total.
The left-hander will once again be expected to anchor the innings if the Proteas lose an early wicket. His ability to rotate the strike while accelerating when required makes him an important part of the batting lineup.
Dewald Brevis should continue at No. 4. The explosive batter scored 33 off 28 balls in the opening game, striking three fours and a six.
Brevis has the ability to completely change the momentum of an innings once he settles in. With Namibia likely to attack him with spin during the middle overs, his performance could be one of the highlights of the second ODI.
Rubin Hermann is expected to retain his place in the middle order. He was dismissed for eight in the first game but remains a useful option given his ability to attack the bowling.
With South Africa’s top four providing considerable stability, Hermann could be given the freedom to play an aggressive role in the middle overs.
Jason Smith made a useful return to the ODI side after missing the T20I tri-series because of an adductor injury. He scored 15 off 13 deliveries in the opener and can also contribute with the ball if required.
His experience and all-round ability make him an important part of the Proteas’ balance. Smith is therefore likely to keep his place.
Corbin Bosch produced an excellent finishing performance in the first ODI, smashing an unbeaten 39 off just 24 balls, including three sixes. He also picked up a wicket while bowling seven overs.
His ability to contribute in both departments makes him one of the most valuable players in the XI. Bosch is expected to continue at No. 7.
Duan Jansen made an encouraging ODI debut, claiming a wicket while conceding only 13 runs from his six overs. His economy rate of 2.16 underlined how effectively he controlled the scoring.
The left-arm seamer also adds batting depth, making him an ideal No. 8 option.
Captain Bjorn Fortuin is expected to lead the side once again. Although he went wicketless in the first ODI, the left-arm spinner bowled six overs and will remain an important option during the middle phase.
Fortuin’s tactical decisions will also be crucial as South Africa look to close out the series.
Prenelan Subrayen was the standout bowler in the opening ODI. The off-spinner claimed four wickets for just 29 runs and repeatedly troubled Namibia’s batters.
After such a commanding performance, there is virtually no reason to leave him out. His ability to exploit the Windhoek conditions could again make him a major threat.
Kwena Maphaka should complete the bowling attack. The young fast bowler claimed two wickets in the first ODI and conceded 32 runs from six overs.
His pace gives Fortuin an attacking option with the new ball and during the middle overs. With Maphaka still gaining experience in ODI cricket, another outing against Namibia will be valuable for his development.
