Few batsmen in modern cricket have combined consistency and match-winning impact as effectively as Steve Smith. Since establishing himself as Australia’s premier Test batsman in the mid-2010s, he has produced hundreds in every major cricketing nation and against every leading opposition. His record places him among the finest players of his generation, but statistics alone cannot explain his greatness.

What separates Smith from many other prolific run-scorers is the context of his best innings. Time and again, he has delivered when conditions were difficult, when batting looked close to impossible, or when Australia needed a player capable of shifting the course of a match. Ranking his greatest performances is subjective, but these three innings stand out for their significance, quality and lasting impact.

3. 239 vs England, Perth, 2017

By the time Australia arrived in Perth for the third Test of the 2017-18 Ashes, Smith was already the dominant batsman in world cricket. England’s bowlers had spent two Tests searching for answers, but none arrived at the WACA. Walking in with Australia well placed, Smith turned a strong position into complete control through an innings that showcased his remarkable concentration and command.

His 239 came from 399 deliveries and formed the backbone of Australia’s massive first-innings total of 662 for 9 declared. Unlike some of his more celebrated rescue acts, this was an exhibition of authority. He dictated the tempo of the game, punished loose bowling and rarely looked troubled. Australia won by an innings and 41 runs, retained the Ashes and effectively ended England’s hopes of mounting a comeback in the series.

2. 144 vs England, Edgbaston, 2019

Few Test innings have been played under greater scrutiny. Returning to Test cricket after a year-long absence, Smith walked out to a chorus of boos in the opening Ashes Test at Edgbaston. Australia were in serious trouble at 122 for 8 and England appeared on course to seize the initiative in the series.

What followed was one of the finest Ashes centuries of the modern era. Smith rebuilt the innings with extraordinary patience and control, turning a looming collapse into a competitive total. His 144 transformed the match and shifted momentum back towards Australia. He followed it with another century in the second innings, ensuring a memorable victory. The innings was important not only because of the runs scored but because it re-established Smith as the premier batsman in Test cricket after one of the most turbulent periods of his career.

1. 109 vs India, Pune, 2017

Smith has scored bigger hundreds, but few innings can match the quality of his 109 in Pune. The pitch was deteriorating rapidly, India’s spinners were operating in familiar conditions and batting throughout the match was exceptionally difficult. Across both teams, accomplished batsmen struggled to survive for long periods.

While wickets fell regularly around him, Smith produced an innings of exceptional judgement and adaptability. He assessed the conditions quicker than anyone else and found scoring opportunities where most batsmen found only danger. His century was the only hundred of the match and proved decisive in Australia’s eventual 333-run victory.

The significance of the innings extends beyond the scorecard. India had not lost a home Test in more than four years and were overwhelming favourites entering the series. Smith’s century gave Australia a famous victory and remains one of the greatest innings played by a visiting batsman in India. It was a masterclass in problem-solving, resilience and technique, qualities that have defined Steve Smith’s remarkable Test career.

Angelo Mathews’ Top 3 Test Performances

Angelo Mathews’ Test career was never built around spectacular headlines or relentless record-breaking. Instead, it was shaped by substance. For much of the last decade, he was the batsman Sri Lanka turned to when conditions were difficult, wickets were falling and a rescue act was required. His best innings rarely came on flat pitches with little at stake. They came when the team was under pressure and needed a player capable of holding everything together.

Whether as a middle-order batsman, a seam-bowling all-rounder or a captain guiding the team through a period of transition, Mathews has repeatedly answered the call when his country needed him most.

On This Day: Steve Smith Was Born

On June 2, 1989, in Sydney, a cricketer was born who would spend much of his career challenging conventional wisdom. Steve Smith’s journey has never followed the script that cricket usually writes for its stars. He did not arrive as a teenage batting prodigy destined for greatness. He was not burdened by comparisons with Australian legends from the moment he entered the professional game. Instead, he emerged as a promising leg-spinning all-rounder before evolving into one of the most prolific Test batsmen the sport has known.

Which Icon Player Will Decide Aakash Tigers vs Eagle Thane Strikers in T20 Mumbai 2026?

Sarfaraz Khan is the bigger match-winner, but Shardul Thakur is the bigger match-changer. Sarfaraz carries 1,517 T20 runs and a SMAT 2025 century behind him into this fixture; Shardul carries 113 IPL wickets and a lower-order batting ability that has shifted matches on its own. The T20 Mumbai League rewards players who do both, and Sairaj Patil, Man of the Tournament in Season 3, proved that last year for Eagle Thane Strikers. This match will be decided by whichever icon plays the bigger role in the knockout moments.

Which Surrey Batters Can Survive Middlesex’s Spin in Vitality Blast 2026, Match 36?

Surrey’s batters have a spin problem and three days to solve it. Jacob Lintott’s left-arm wrist spin took 3/19 off 4 overs against them last Sunday, dismissing Roy, Curran, and Evans as Surrey collapsed to 116 all out. Middlesex arrive at the Kia Oval on Wednesday with two specialist spinners in Zafar Gohar and Luke Hollman, and the knowledge that Surrey’s middle order has already shown it can be tied down and taken apart by wrist spin in the same innings. That’s the problem this match will test.

Which WI Playing XI Should Face SL in the 1st ODI of the Sri Lanka Tour 2026?

West Indies have a pace attack they haven’t fielded in nearly a year. Alzarri Joseph returns from a back injury that kept him out since July 2025, and with Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales alongside him, the home side has the firepower to test Sri Lanka on the fastest surface in the Caribbean. Shimron Hetmyer isn’t available until the 3rd ODI, which settles the middle-order selection debate before it starts. Sabina Park on 3 June belongs to pace bowlers, and the West Indies have three of them ready.

How Has Liam Dawson’s Red-Ball Retirement Made Him Hampshire’s Biggest T20 Threat in HAM vs SUS Vitality Blast 2026 Match 35?

Dawson’s red-ball retirement has made him Hampshire’s most dangerous T20 finisher by removing the one thing that was suppressing his white-ball ceiling: divided preparation. He’s no longer managing a body that plays four-day cricket in parallel. When he arrives at the crease in the 14th over, every ounce of his focus has been on this format for weeks. The numbers since May 2026 confirm it. A strike rate of 161.53 across two innings, a match-winning 76 off 44 balls, and an economy of 7.08 with the ball, Dawson isn’t a support act anymore.

Which 3 Batters Will Shape Pakistan vs Australia 2nd ODI in Lahore?

Lahore doesn’t just change the venue, it changes the balance of this series entirely. Gaddafi Stadium’s true, even-paced surface rewards positive intent, and after Australia were bowled out for 200 at Rawalpindi, the last thing they need is another slow track that keeps pace off the ball. Pakistan‘s middle order knows this ground. So does Josh Inglis. The three batters who matter most on June 2, Babar Azam, Inglis, and Salman Agha, each arrive with something to prove, and the Lahore pitch will give all three every opportunity to prove it.
