Brian Lara is often celebrated for his extraordinary achievements in Test cricket, but his impact in One Day Internationals was equally significant. A stylish and dependable batter, Lara played several match-winning knocks for the West Indies in the limited-overs format. He also led his team to a historic triumph in the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy, guiding them to their maiden title with a memorable win over England at The Oval in London.

He announced before the 2007 Cricket World Cup that this would be his last appearance in One Day Internationals. Over the course of his ODI career, Lara featured in 299 matches, amassing 10,405 runs at an average of 40.48, including 19 centuries and 63 half-centuries.

Here are top three performances of Brian Lara in ODIs:

169 vs Sri Lanka, 1995, Sharjah

One of Lara’s most explosive innings came against Sri Lanka in the 1995 Singer Champions Trophy in Sharjah. In a high-scoring encounter, West Indies posted a formidable total of 333/7 in 50 overs. Lara was the star of the innings, smashing 169 runs off just 129 balls, which included 15 fours and four sixes at an impressive strike rate of over 130.

He was well supported by Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who added a quickfire 62* off 45 balls. Sri Lanka mounted a strong chase and reached 329 before being bowled out, falling just four runs short. Centuries from Hashan Tillakaratne and a solid contribution from Roshan Mahanama kept them in the contest, but Lara’s brilliance ultimately proved decisive in a thrilling West Indies victory.

156 vs Pakistan, 2005, Adelaide

Lara delivered another masterclass in Adelaide during the VB Series against Pakistan. West Indies batted first and posted an imposing 339/4, largely due to Lara’s commanding 156 off 138 balls. His innings featured 12 fours and five sixes, showcasing his ability to combine elegance with power hitting.

Chanderpaul once again played a crucial supporting role, scoring 85 runs. Pakistan struggled in their chase and were restricted to 281/9, with Mohammad Yousuf top-scoring with 45. The West Indies bowling unit, led by Reon King, Wavell Hinds, and Dwayne Bravo, ensured a comfortable 58-run win.

146* vs New Zealand, 1996, Port of Spain

Lara’s unbeaten 146 against New Zealand in Port of Spain remains one of his finest performances. New Zealand posted 219/8 in their 50 overs, with Roger Twose and Nathan Astle contributing useful runs.

In response, West Indies chased down the target comfortably, finishing at 225/3 in 45.4 overs. The left-handed batter anchored the innings with a superb 146* off 134 balls, striking 12 fours and three sixes. His knock ensured there were no hiccups in the chase and highlighted his ability to control the tempo of an innings under pressure. Despite a tidy spell from Gavin Larsen, who picked up three wickets, New Zealand had no answers to Lara’s dominance.

Why Punjab Kings Lost to Delhi Capitals in the 55th Match of IPL 2026: 3 Key Reasons

Punjab Kings posted 210/5 at Dharamsala. Delhi Capitals chased it in 19 overs. The final margin was three wickets and six balls remaining. PBKS reduced DC to 33/3, then 74/4, and still lost. Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten 59 and Priyansh Arya’s 24-ball fifty built a platform that should have been enough. It wasn’t, because Axar Patel’s 56 off 30 balls reversed the match at its most critical moment, and 17 wides gifted Delhi 17 deliveries they shouldn’t have received in a chase won with an over to spare.

What KKR’s Playing XI for IPL 2026 Match 57 Reveals About Their Raipur Spin Trap for RCB

Kolkata Knight Riders arrive at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur with a playing XI designed around one specific insight: this venue rewards smart cricket over spectacular cricket. Large boundaries reduce the value of aerial hitting. The black-soil surface slows through the innings and assists spin. KKR have selected accordingly, with Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine controlling the middle overs, Cameron Green covering two phases simultaneously, and Finn Allen delivering the explosive powerplay start the total needs before conditions tighten.

Why Mumbai Indians Lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 54th Match of IPL 2026: 3 Key Reasons

Mumbai Indians had RCB at 39/3 and needed 127 from that position to defend 166. They didn’t get it. Krunal Pandya’s 73 off 46 balls, 11 wides, a no-ball, and a bowling unit that lost discipline precisely when the match demanded the opposite combined to hand Royal Challengers Bengaluru a two-wicket win off the final ball at Raipur. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 4/23 in the first innings and Jasprit Bumrah’s 20-run economy across four overs weren’t enough. Three specific failures explain why.
