Pakistan and Sri Lanka are set to begin their three-match T20I series when they face each other in the first game at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on October 9. The series will mark the beginning of a busy multi-format tour, with both sides looking to build momentum in the shortest format. Pakistan have handed the T20I captaincy to Sahibzada Farhan, while Kusal Mendis will lead Sri Lanka.
Pakistan will enter the contest with several players who impressed during the 2026 T20 World Cup and Asian Games, while Sri Lanka will be without regulars Pathum Nissanka and Wanindu Hasaranga due to injuries. Kusal Mendis, who scored 198 runs during Sri Lanka’s recent ODI tour of England, will therefore carry significant responsibility with the bat.
With several experienced campaigners and exciting new names on both sides, the opening contest could be decided by individual battles. Here are the top three player match-ups to watch out for in the first T20I between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
1. Sahibzada Farhan vs Maheesh Theekshana
The battle between Sahibzada Farhan and Maheesh Theekshana could set the tone for the contest during the powerplay.
Farhan has been handed the responsibility of leading Pakistan in the T20I series after an excellent 2026. The right-handed opener was Pakistan’s leading run-scorer at the T20 World Cup, accumulating 383 runs at a strike rate of 160. He also captained Pakistan at the recently concluded Asian Games.
His aggressive approach at the top makes him an obvious threat, but Sri Lanka have a quality option to counter him in Theekshana.
The mystery spinner is among the most experienced members of Sri Lanka’s bowling attack and is capable of operating during the powerplay. His ability to vary his pace and trajectory can make life difficult for attacking openers.
Farhan will look to take advantage of the fielding restrictions, whereas Theekshana’s objective will be to restrict his scoring options and force him into an error. An early wicket for Theekshana could put Pakistan’s new-look batting order under pressure.
2. Fakhar Zaman vs Nuwan Thushara
Another intriguing contest could be between Pakistan’s explosive left-hander Fakhar Zaman and Sri Lankan seamer Nuwan Thushara.
Fakhar remains one of Pakistan’s most dangerous white-ball batters and possesses the ability to change the momentum of an innings within a few deliveries. His aggressive strokeplay makes him particularly dangerous during the powerplay, when he can attack both pace and spin.
Sri Lanka could rely on Thushara to counter that threat. The right-arm pacer has a distinctive slingy action and can be difficult to pick up when bowling at full pace. His yorkers are another important weapon, particularly against batters looking to attack the stumps.
The key for Thushara will be to maintain his lengths and avoid allowing Fakhar to free his arms. The Pakistan batter, meanwhile, will look to put pressure on the bowler from the outset.
If Fakhar gets through Thushara’s opening spell, Pakistan could gain a significant advantage. Conversely, a wicket for Thushara could provide Sri Lanka with the breakthrough they need against Pakistan’s aggressive top order.
3. Kusal Mendis vs Naseem Shah
The third battle could be between Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis and Pakistan’s returning pace spearhead Naseem Shah.
Mendis has been handed the leadership responsibility in the T20I series and will be particularly important given Sri Lanka’s absence of Pathum Nissanka. The right-hander comes into the series with confidence after scoring 198 runs in three ODIs on the recent England tour, including a century.
However, he faces a stern challenge against Naseem.
The Pakistan fast bowler has returned to the T20I squad after last featuring in the format against Sri Lanka in February 2026. His ability to generate pace and movement with the new ball makes him a serious threat to Mendis during the opening overs.
Naseem will look to attack the Sri Lankan captain with a combination of pace, hard lengths and movement, while Mendis will aim to use the pace of the bowler and target scoring areas around the off side.
This could be one of the most important battles of the match. If Naseem removes Mendis early, Pakistan could expose Sri Lanka’s inexperienced top order. If Mendis survives the initial challenge, he could use his experience to build a substantial innings.
