The IPL 2026 mini-auction will take place at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on December 16, 2025. The one-day event starts at 2:30 PM IST, and fans can follow the action live through official streaming and TV partners.
Officials say the auction pool is being trimmed to roughly 350 players (reports vary slightly by outlet), with India’s top franchises competing to fill 77 remaining squad slots — including 31 overseas places — ahead of the new season, which is scheduled to kick off in late March.
Not all teams enter the auction with the same financial strength. Across the 10 franchises, a combined remaining purse of ₹237.55 crore is available to spend at the mini-auction. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lead the pack with a huge ₹64.30 crore still in hand and 13 slots to fill — the most of any team. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) follow with ₹43.40 crore, and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have around ₹25.50 crore available. Those three clubs are therefore expected to be central to bidding drama.
Because this is a mini-auction (not a full mega-auction), most teams will target specific gaps in their squads — a finisher, an extra spinner, or a pace-bowling all-rounder — rather than rebuild from scratch. But franchises with large purses, especially KKR and CSK, may still play aggressively to improve balance and depth.
A sizable group of international stars and high-value Indian players are on the market. Several capped players have a maximum base price of ₹2 crore, and a number of top all-rounders and power hitters are expected to draw the most attention.
A key new rule this year limits how much an overseas player can actually take home: the IPL has capped the maximum fee an international player can receive at ₹18 crore. If the winning bid exceeds that cap, the surplus will be collected by the BCCI and redirected to its player development and welfare programmes. That change is designed to tame runaway mini-auction price spikes and protect franchises’ budgets.
The auction will be streamed live on official platforms and shown on TV in India. Fans can watch on major streaming services (JioHotstar) and the Star Sports network, with the IPL website providing live updates and player lists during the day.
Expect heated contests for fast-bowling all-rounders and hard-hitting batters. The auction’s sequential “sets” structure (batters, bowlers, all-rounders, wicketkeepers, capped and uncapped) will force teams to react quickly when targets come up for sale. Smart franchises will balance current needs with future flexibility, keeping an eye on squad composition limits (max 25 players; up to eight overseas in a squad).
This mini-auction may be shorter than a mega event, but it carries huge strategic weight. With large purses concentrated in a few teams and new salary rules for overseas stars, the bidding room promises drama, clever deals and a few surprise buys that could shape the IPL 2026 season. Fans tuning in on December 16 should expect fast-moving action — and some unforgettable auction moments.
