The football world is no stranger to intense rivalries, but the ongoing animosity between Brazilian stars Thiago Mendes and Neymar has recently taken center stage. On August 16, 2026, during a Brazilian Serie A clash between Vasco da Gama and Santos FC at São Januário stadium, the tension reached a boiling point. During the pre-match greetings, Vasco midfielder Thiago Mendes pointedly refused to shake the hand of Santos forward Neymar. This icy snub instantly went viral, sparking fierce debate across the global football community. This frosty exchange was the latest chapter in a bitter, six-year feud. This comprehensive overview dives into the origins of their deep-seated rivalry, from the infamous 2020 tackle in France to their explosive 2026 encounters, and explains how fans can catch all the drama live on Sports Live Hub (SLH).
To understand the recent handshake snub, one must rewind to December 2020. During a Ligue 1 match between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais, Mendes executed a reckless “scissors” tackle, catching Neymar completely off guard. The heavy challenge resulted in a severe ankle sprain for Neymar, who left the pitch in tears on a stretcher. Mendes was issued a red card following a VAR review. Although Mendes issued an apology, the incident caused lasting animosity and drew heavy public criticism from Neymar’s camp.
Fast forward to 2026, with both players returning to Brazil—Neymar at Santos and Mendes at Vasco da Gama. The dormant rivalry exploded during a Matchday 4 encounter in February. Following a physical altercation on the pitch, Neymar did not mince his words during a halftime interview. He famously labeled Mendes an “idiot,” claiming the midfielder had explicitly threatened to injure him again. “He injured me once at PSG and today he promised to do it again,” Neymar stated to SporTV.
The bad blood carried directly into their August 16, 2026 rematch. After Mendes deliberately ignored Neymar during the pre-game handshake line, the hostility spilled onto the pitch. Minutes into the game, the two squared up aggressively after a foul. Neymar dropped to the turf, alleging Mendes had struck his face, leading to a chaotic scene where teammates intervened. Despite the intense personal battle, Santos ultimately dominated the fixture, securing a decisive 3-0 victory. However, the handshake snub remains the defining story of a grudge that time has failed to heal.
