Opinions, analysis and commentary
Jasprit Bumrah hasn’t forgotten how to bowl. His death over numbers still prove that. The problem is what the Mumbai Indians are asking him to do before those overs arrive, opening the powerplay against batters swinging freely, without rhythm, without the match context that makes his variations dangerous. Against Lucknow Super Giants, that misuse became visible in a single over that shifted momentum before he’d settled into his spell. The skill is intact. The deployment is a disaster.
Bumrah’s entire bowling identity is built around pressure and precision. He reads match situations, identifies a batter’s discomfort, and executes a specific delivery at the precise moment it causes maximum damage. None of that works when he enters the attack at over one against hitters who haven’t faced a ball.
The power play rewards pace and swing in the conventional sense. Bumrah’s package is control and deception, which functions most destructively when batters are set, and scoring has become comfortable. Forcing him into the new ball role removes the conditions his variations require and exposes him to the one phase of T20 cricket where his approach carries the most risk. Against LSG specifically, early aggression from their top order found Bumrah in a role his best deliveries weren’t designed to solve.
The tactical misuse wouldn’t matter as much if execution remained perfect. The IPL 2026 evidence shows it hasn’t. Wides, missed yorkers, and back-to-back errors inside single overs have appeared in recent matches at a frequency that defined none of his peak seasons.
His pace sitting in the mid-130s kph range reflects rhythm disruption more than physical decline. Bumrah at full rhythm doesn’t bowl mid-130s as his average. He touches it when settling into a spell and builds through an over. When rhythm is absent because of role mismatch and team pressure, those settlement deliveries become the entire over rather than a brief opening phase. One spiralling over against LSG shifted momentum in a way that affected every bowling decision MI made afterward in that innings.
The clearest evidence that this is a mismanagement problem rather than a Bumrah problem is what happens when he bowls in the 14th to 20th overs. His slower balls and dipping yorkers in the death still create genuine problems for set batters looking to accelerate.
His body doesn’t bowl those deliveries differently when the over number changes. His skill set is identical across all 24 deliveries he bowls in a match. What changes is context. Death over batters face a different pressure equation, and Bumrah’s variations exploit hesitation and pressure better than any pace in the attack. MI already knows this because they see it every time he bowls late. They simply haven’t acted on what those numbers are telling them about where his overs belong.
Mumbai Indians have struggled collectively this season, and that context makes Bumrah’s individual lapses appear worse than they would inside a functioning team structure. When MI are defending below-par totals or chasing under pressure, their lead bowler carries an expectation weight that even a peak-form Bumrah would find difficult to sustain across every over.
Across this IPL, that pattern has repeated in match after match. Early runs conceded don’t just cost MI six balls. They shift field placements, alter batting intent, and force MI’s captain into reactive bowling changes that further disrupt Bumrah’s rhythm going into his later overs. His body language reflects a bowler overcorrecting rather than executing, and overcorrection from someone with his precision produces exactly the errors that have defined this difficult stretch.
