On this day in 2018, Ireland created history by becoming the 11th nation to play Test cricket. Their debut match in the longest format came against Pakistan at Malahide Cricket Club Ground in Dublin. Although Ireland eventually lost the contest by five wickets, the spirited performance from the hosts earned admiration from the cricketing world and marked a memorable beginning to their Test journey.

Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first. Despite a few early hiccups, the visitors managed to post 310/9 before declaring their innings. Asad Shafiq played a composed knock of 62 runs off 121 deliveries, striking eight boundaries. The all-rounder Shadab Khan contributed an important 55 runs from 105 balls, while Faheem Ashraf produced a brilliant lower-order innings of 83 runs off 115 deliveries to push Pakistan to a competitive total.

For Ireland, veteran seamer Tim Murtagh was outstanding with the ball, finishing with figures of 4/45. Stuart Thompson also impressed by claiming 3/62 and consistently troubling the Pakistani batters.

Ireland’s first innings, however, did not go according to plan. The hosts struggled against Pakistan’s disciplined pace attack and were bowled out for just 130 runs. Kevin O’Brien emerged as the top scorer with a fighting 40, while wicketkeeper Gary Wilson remained unbeaten on 33. Pakistan’s bowling unit dominated proceedings, with Mohammad Abbas starring with figures of 4/44. Shadab Khan once again made an impact by picking up 3/31 with his leg spin.

Trailing significantly, Ireland were forced to follow on. What followed was one of the most courageous batting performances by a debutant Test nation. Determined to make a statement, the Irish batters showed tremendous resilience and character in the second innings, eventually posting 339 runs.

Kevin O’Brien played the innings of his life, scoring a magnificent 118 runs off 217 deliveries. His century was historic as it became the first-ever Test hundred by an Irish batter. His knock was filled with grit and attacking strokeplay whenever required. Stuart Thompson also played a vital role, scoring a valuable 53 runs from 116 balls and sharing important partnerships that frustrated Pakistan.

Despite Ireland’s resistance, Pakistan’s experienced attack eventually broke through. Mohammad Abbas once again proved to be the standout bowler with excellent figures of 5/66, while Mohammad Amir chipped in with 3/63.

Pakistan were left with a target of 160 runs to win the match. Ireland’s bowlers fought hard and created moments of tension during the chase, but Pakistan held their nerve to secure victory by five wickets. Imam-ul-Haq anchored the chase with a crucial 74, while Babar Azam contributed a composed 59 to guide the visitors home.

Although Ireland ended up on the losing side, the match remains one of the proudest moments in Irish cricket history. Their fighting spirit, especially in the second innings, showcased their potential in Test cricket and announced their arrival on the biggest stage of the sport.

Why Mumbai Indians Lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 54th Match of IPL 2026: 3 Key Reasons

Mumbai Indians had RCB at 39/3 and needed 127 from that position to defend 166. They didn’t get it. Krunal Pandya’s 73 off 46 balls, 11 wides, a no-ball, and a bowling unit that lost discipline precisely when the match demanded the opposite combined to hand Royal Challengers Bengaluru a two-wicket win off the final ball at Raipur. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 4/23 in the first innings and Jasprit Bumrah’s 20-run economy across four overs weren’t enough. Three specific failures explain why.

Which Key Players Will Decide CSK vs LSG IPL 2026 Match 53 Tonight

MA Chidambaram Stadium produces a specific kind of T20 contest: one where the middle overs between 7 and 15 decide everything before the death-over tactics become relevant. Sanju Samson’s 402 runs at a strike rate of 167.50 make him the most dangerous batter on either side. Noor Ahmad’s 11 wickets and best of 3 for 21 make him the most likely match-turning bowler. Anshul Kamboj’s 17 wickets give CSK their own attacking option. The phase where all three intersect determines which team controls this fixture from the moment the power play ends.
