Andrew Symonds is one of the finest white-ball players to have represented Australia. He was a destructive batter who could hit some towering sixes and a multi-skilled bowler who could bowl off-spin as well as medium pace. Apart from his batting and bowling skills, Symonds was also one of the best fielders of his era. His combination with Michael Clarke, fielding at cover and backward point, respectively, was exhilarating to watch as they could save many runs with their sharp reflexes and brilliant athleticism.

Symonds passed away in a single-vehicle road accident at Hervey Range, outside of Townsville, Queensland, on May 14, 2022, at the age of just 46. He was pronounced dead at the scene after paramedics tried to revive him.

Talking about his early career, he was an AIS Australian Cricket Academy scholarship holder in 1994. He was eligible to play for England as it was the country of his birth. He could have also opted to play for the West Indies due to his ancestry. In 1995, he was named as part of the England A team that was set to tour Pakistan in the winter. However, he decided to forego that opportunity and decided to pursue an international career in Australia.

Symonds, who played for four English counties during his career – Gloucestershire, Kent, Lancashire, and Surrey – made his international debut on November 10, 1998. It was during an ODI between Australia and Pakistan at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. He didn’t get to bat but bowled two overs and conceded 14 runs.

Despite being an all-rounder who could bat at a commendable strike rate, Symonds didn’t get instant success in international cricket. He was in and out of the team back in his early days. However, he was named in Australia’s squad for the 2003 ODI World Cup. Ricky Ponting backed him a lot during that period, understanding his surreal talent.

Symonds smashed 143* against Pakistan in the first match and it became a watershed moment in his career. He also scored 91* in the semi-final against Sri Lanka and finished the tournament with a staggering average of 163.

Symonds went on to play 198 ODIs for Australia. He also played 26 Tests, making his debut in 2004 against Sri Lanka in Galle. He could have been one of the most formidable T20 players if the format had been introduced earlier in his career. In 11 T20I innings, he amassed 337 runs at an average of 48.14 and a strike rate of 169.35. In Tests, he averaged 40.61 and in ODIs, 39.44. Symonds also played 39 matches in the IPL and won the tournament in 2009, scoring a crucial 33 in the final and picking two wickets.

OTD 2017 – The highest partnership in women’s ODI history

The Indian men‘s team has had some iconic partnerships over the years. From Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar to Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, India have been blessed with some fabulous opening pairs. Even down the order, the several match-winning partnerships between Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni have stood the test of time. However, the Indian women’s team also have some partnership accolades to cherish. The Indian team holds the record for the highest partnership in Women’s ODIs. Deepti Sharma and Punam Raut achieved this feat on May 15, 2017, against Ireland at the Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. This match was a part of the Women’s Quadrangular Series in South Africa. India, South Africa, Ireland, and Zimbabwe were the four teams that participated in this multi-nation tournament. Talking about the aforementioned encounter, Indian captain Mithali Raj won the toss and opted to bat first. Deepti Sharma opened the batting along with Punam Raut. The latter played conservatively, while Deepti took the attack to the cleaners. Deepti also took more of the strike and was eventually dismissed in the 46th over after scoring a magnificent 188 runs off 160 balls with the help of 27 fours and two sixes. She finished with a strike rate of 117.50. Raut, on the other hand, retired hurt soon after for an individual score of 109 off 116 balls, belting 11 boundaries. The partnership between Deepti and Punam yielded a record 320 runs. They comfortably broke the previous record for the highest partnership in Women’s ODIs, which was set by England’s opening pair of Sarah Taylor and Caroline Atkins against South Africa at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. They had forged an opening stand of 268. After Deepti and Punam made way, Shikha Pandey was promoted up the order, and she smashed 27 runs off just 14 balls with the help of four boundaries. The Women in Blue finished on a commanding total of 358/2 in 50 overs. In reply, Ireland Women got off to a sedate start as openers Mary Waldron and Leah Paul added 42 runs inside 17 overs. However, once India got the first breakthrough, the Irish batters to follow couldn’t provide much of a resistance. Wickets fell one after the other as the Indian bowlers had a field day. Eventually, the European side was bowled out for just 109 in 40 overs. Rajeshwari Gayakwad was the pick of the Indian bowlers, finishing with stunning figures of 4/18 in eight overs. Pandey also bagged a three-for in her nine-over spell. Deepti showcased her all-round skills by bowling tightly and picking up the wicket of Paul, who was the first Irish batter to be dismissed in the match.

Which Team’s Powerplay Tactics Provide the Real Edge in KKR vs GT Match 60?

Gujarat Titans own the powerplay edge in this fixture, a 4-1 head-to-head lead, a dominant recent run of form, and a bowling unit built to strangle KKR’s top order before the field opens. However, Eden Gardens introduces a major variable that GT hasn’t fully tested yet: heavy second-innings dew, which can neutralize spin control and tilt the chase heavily in KKR’s favour.

What Selection Changes Must Pakistan Make to Turn Around the BAN vs PAK 2nd Test?

Pakistan needs two changes that fix the same structural problem: a left-handed opener at the top and a left-arm spinner in the attack. The 163-run collapse at Mirpur wasn’t bad luck; it was a batting order that handed Taijul Islam a predictable angle for 90 consecutive deliveries. Moving to Sylhet makes the problem worse. A surface that turns sharply from Day 2 and deteriorates faster than Mirpur demands a line-up built to disrupt spin lines, not absorb them. Pakistan’s WTC final qualification depends on what their selectors decide before the toss on May 16.

Why Sunrisers Hyderabad Lost to Gujarat Titans in the 56th Match of IPL 2026: 3 Key Reasons

Gujarat Titans posted 168/5 at Narendra Modi Stadium. Sunrisers Hyderabad were bowled out for 86 in 14.5 overs, losing by 82 runs. Travis Head fell for a duck in over one. Abhishek Sharma departed in over two. By the third over, SRH sat at 23/3, and the match was already shaped. Kagiso Rabada, Jason Holder, and Mohammed Siraj removed seven recognised batters before the 11th over ended. Three phases explain the collapse fully: a powerplay SRH never survived, a bowling unit that conceded control when GT were vulnerable, and a middle-over partnership they allowed to run unchecked.
