On May 20, 1989, Sarah Taylor was born in Whitechapel, London. Widely regarded as one of the finest wicketkeeper-batters in the history of women’s cricket, Taylor represented England women’s national cricket team between 2006 and 2019, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy with her elegant stroke play, sharp wicketkeeping skills, and fearless approach to batting.

Taylor appeared in 10 Tests, 126 ODIs, and 90 T20Is during her international career. Remarkably, she became the fastest cricketer, male or female, to earn caps in all three international formats, achieving the feat within a span of just nine days against India women’s national cricket team in 2006.

A naturally gifted batter, Taylor usually opened the innings in white-ball cricket while occupying a middle-order role in Test matches. Her attacking yet graceful batting style made her one of England’s most dependable performers across formats. Alongside her international success, she also enjoyed a distinguished domestic career, representing teams including Sussex, Lancashire Thunder, Surrey Stars, Northern Diamonds, Welsh Fire, Wellington, South Australia, and Adelaide Strikers.

Taylor achieved several milestones throughout her illustrious career. In 2008, she became the youngest woman cricketer to score 1,000 ODI runs. The same year, she and Caroline Atkins put together a then-record 268-run opening partnership in women’s ODIs at Lord’s Cricket Ground.

A year later, in 2009, Taylor played a key role in one of the most successful periods in England women’s cricket history. She opened the batting as England won both the Women’s Cricket World Cup in Australia and the ICC Women’s World T20 title. During the ODI series against Australia women’s national cricket team that year, she scored a brilliant century at Chelmsford, surpassing Enid Bakewell’s record for the highest individual score by an Englishwoman against Australia.

Her brilliance earned global recognition. Taylor won the ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year award in both 2012 and 2013 before being named ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year in 2014. She was also among the first group of 18 women cricketers to receive central contracts from the England and Wales Cricket Board. In 2015, she became the first woman inducted into the Legends Lane at the County Cricket Ground in Hove.

Despite her success, Taylor courageously opened up about her struggles with anxiety in 2016, revealing how mental health issues had affected her performances and overall wellbeing. In 2019, ahead of the Women’s Ashes T20Is, she withdrew from England’s squad to focus on her mental health before eventually announcing her retirement from international cricket later that year.

Even after retiring, Taylor continued to contribute to the game. In 2021, she became the first female specialist coach for a senior English men’s county side when she joined Sussex as wicketkeeping coach. She also returned to playing action with Welsh Fire in The Hundred and later worked as assistant coach for Manchester Originals. In 2024, she was appointed England Lions’ wicketkeeping coach for their South Africa tour.

Across her international career, Taylor scored 300 Test runs, 4,056 ODI runs, and 2,177 T20I runs, cementing her status as one of the greatest wicketkeeper-batters women’s cricket has ever seen.

These two XIs are not playing the same game. GT has named their strongest available side to chase a top-two seeding, a position worth a double chance in the knockouts. Both sides arrive at Narendra Modi Stadium on May 21 with genuine stakes, just very different ones.
