Henry Olonga was the first black cricketer and the youngest-ever to represent the Zimbabwean national team. A fast bowler by trade, Olonga has had a storied career, filled with differing highs and lows. Regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s fastest bowlers, he was a dangerous customer to face at his best, but often erred in the form of wides and no-balls.
Olonga made his first-class debut at the age of 17 for Matabeleland in the Logan Cup and picked up five wickets. He made his Zimbabwe debut aged 18 years and 212 days, the youngest in Zimbabwe cricket history, against Pakistan in March 1995. He took a wicket off his first over but was reprimanded for throwing. After seeking advice from the great Australian pacer Dennis Lillee, he remodelled his action.
He made his ODI debut in 1995 in South Africa and picked up his first Test five-wicket haul against India. But perhaps one of the more infamous moments that Olanga is remembered for is his black armband protest against the Zimbabwe government. During the 2003 Cricket World Cup, Olonga and teammate Andy Flower wore black armbands to protest the “death of democracy” in the country, as an act against economic suffering in the country. The action, lauded widely for the symbolism and bravery, saw both players forced to leave Zimbabwe, after which they settled in the United Kingdom.
In 30 Test matches, Olonga has picked up 68 wickets, averaging 38.52, with two five-wicket hauls. He has picked up 58 wickets in 50 ODIs at an average of 34.08. He still holds the record for the best bowling figures by a Zimbabwean in ODIs, picking up 6 for 19 against England at Cape Town in 2000.
