On May 26, 1988, in Arima, Trinidad and Tobago, Sunil Narine was born and has become one of the most influential T20 cricketers of the modern era. A left-handed batter and right-arm off-spinner, Narine built a reputation as a dangerous all-rounder whose mystery spin troubled batters across the world. Though he represented the West Indies in all three formats, it was in franchise cricket, especially the IPL, where he achieved legendary status. 

Narine made his first-class debut for Trinidad and Tobago in February 2009 during the Regional Four Day Competition. His start was modest, as he bowled thirteen overs without taking a wicket. However, his talent soon became evident. In 2011, he played his first Twenty20 match during the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament. Although rain prevented him from bowling in his debut game, he finished the tournament with five wickets at an impressive average of 13.40, helping Trinidad and Tobago lift the title.

Later in 2011, Narine earned his international debut for the West Indies in an ODI series against India. In just his third ODI, he dismissed both Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin, playing a major role in a memorable 16-run victory. His performances continued to improve, and during Australia’s tour of the Caribbean in 2012, he finished as the joint leading wicket-taker alongside Kemar Roach with eleven wickets in the ODI series.

Narine made his Test debut against England in 2012 after strong performances in limited-overs cricket and the IPL. Although his Test career was short, lasting only six matches, he still managed to claim 21 wickets. In ODIs, he took 92 wickets from 65 matches, while in T20 Internationals he collected 52 wickets in 51 appearances. He was also a member of the West Indies squad that won the 2012 ICC T20 World Cup, one of the greatest achievements of his international career.

In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Narine became a true icon for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after being purchased for $700,000 in 2012. Over the years, he transformed from a specialist spinner into a powerful opening batter as well. His achievements in IPL 2024 were remarkable. Narine won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for a record third time and played a vital role in Kolkata Knight Riders winning their third IPL title. He also scored his maiden IPL century, smashing 109 off 56 balls against Rajasthan Royals (RR). 

He is known worldwide as a ‘mystery bowler’, and his variations and deceptive action made him extremely difficult to face. However, his bowling action was questioned several times during his career. In 2016, he was officially cleared to bowl again in all formats of cricket. In 2023, Narine announced his retirement from international cricket, closing a memorable chapter for West Indies cricket. Overall, in 596 T20 matches, he has taken an extraordinary 628 wickets, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest T20 bowlers ever.
