On this day in 2025, the right-handed batter Riyan Parag etched his name into Indian Premier League (IPL) history by becoming the first batter to smash six consecutive sixes in the tournament. The remarkable feat came during Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) chase against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on May 4, 2025. In doing so, Parag surpassed the previous record of five successive sixes held by stars like Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, and Rinku Singh. Interestingly, all such instances of consecutive six-hitting feats in IPL history have occurred in the second innings of matches.
Talking about the game, KKR, the three-time champions, posted a strong total of 206/4 in their 20 overs. The innings began with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine providing a steady start, with Gurbaz contributing 35 runs. Skipper Ajinkya Rahane added 30 runs at No. 3, while a solid 56-run partnership between Rahane and Gurbaz set the tone. The middle phase saw Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Andre Russell stitch together a crucial 61-run stand for the fourth wicket in just 33 balls.
Raghuvanshi made 44 off 31 deliveries, but it was the West Indies powerhouse who dominated proceedings with an unbeaten 57 off 25 balls, striking four boundaries and six sixes at a blistering strike rate. Towards the end, left-handed batter Rinku Singh added a quickfire unbeaten 19 off just six balls, taking KKR past the 200-run mark.
In response, Rajasthan Royals fought valiantly but fell just one run short, finishing at 205/8. Yashasvi Jaiswal chipped in with 34 runs, while Shimron Hetmyer scored 29. Shubham Dubey remained unbeaten on 25 off 14 balls, but the standout performer was undoubtedly Riyan Parag. The young batter played a sensational knock of 95 off 45 deliveries, smashing six fours and eight towering sixes at an impressive strike rate of over 211.
Parag’s historic moment unfolded across two overs rather than within a single one. In the 13th over, bowled by right-arm spinner Moeen Ali, the right-hander began his assault by launching the second delivery over square leg to bring up his half-century. He followed it up with another maximum over long-on, before sending the next ball over square leg again to complete a hat-trick of sixes. The onslaught continued as he dispatched a short ball over long-on, even hitting a display car inside the stadium. The 24-year-old batter capped off the over by lofting the final delivery over long-off, making it five sixes in a row and became the fifth batter to do so.
The streak extended into the next over when the mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy came into the attack. On the second ball, Parag anticipated a full delivery outside off and executed a reverse sweep over backward point to complete the sequence of six consecutive sixes. Despite his heroics, RR narrowly missed out on victory, but Parag’s extraordinary achievement ensured the match would be remembered as one of the most thrilling encounters in IPL history.
