Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been one of India’s finest seamers in T20 cricket, carving out a reputation through his ability to swing the new ball, deceive batters with variations and execute yorkers at the death. Unlike many modern fast bowlers, Bhuvneshwar has never relied solely on raw pace. Instead, his success has come from accuracy, subtle changes of pace and an exceptional understanding of T20 match situations.
Across his T20 career, Bhuvneshwar has taken more than 360 wickets, including five-wicket hauls in the IPL, T20Is and domestic cricket. His T20I career ended in 2022, but several of his spells remain among the most memorable performances by an Indian fast bowler in the format.
While his career contains numerous outstanding performances, three spells particularly stand out for their combination of figures, match situation and impact.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 5/4 against Afghanistan in the 2022 Asia Cup remains arguably the most extraordinary spell of his T20I career.
India faced Afghanistan in a Super 4 encounter in Dubai, with Bhuvneshwar producing a sensational display of new-ball bowling. He removed Afghanistan’s top order almost single-handedly, finishing with five wickets for just four runs in his four-over spell.
The figures were remarkable not merely because of the five wickets but because of the economy with which he operated. Afghanistan were unable to counter his movement and accuracy, and Bhuvneshwar repeatedly found the right areas to create pressure.
His performance also saw him reach 84 T20I wickets and move ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal to become India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is at that stage.
The spell remains his best T20I bowling performance and one of the most economical five-wicket hauls by a bowler in international T20 cricket.

If Bhuvneshwar’s Afghanistan spell showcased his ability to dominate from the beginning, his 5/19 against Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2017 demonstrated his ability to influence a match at both ends of an innings.
Sunrisers Hyderabad had posted 159/6 in Hyderabad, leaving Punjab with a challenging chase. Bhuvneshwar immediately put the visitors under pressure by dismissing Hashim Amla with the first ball of the innings. He subsequently removed Glenn Maxwell, leaving Punjab struggling early in the chase.
However, Manan Vohra produced a sensational counterattack and dragged Punjab back into the contest. The opener smashed 95 off only 50 balls and had taken the equation to just 16 runs from 12 deliveries.
That was when Bhuvneshwar returned to deliver the decisive blow.
He dismissed KC Cariappa before producing an excellent inswinging yorker to trap Vohra leg-before wicket in the penultimate over. Bhuvneshwar then completed figures of 5/19 as Hyderabad defended their total by just five runs.
The performance earned him the Player of the Match award and remains his best IPL bowling figures.

Bhuvneshwar’s 5/24 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2018 was another masterclass in adapting his bowling to T20 cricket.
India had toured South Africa for a three-match T20I series, and Bhuvneshwar played a starring role in the opening game. His five-wicket haul was his maiden five-wicket performance in T20 cricket at international level at that time and demonstrated the growing variety in his bowling.
The spell was particularly impressive because Bhuvneshwar did not simply depend on conventional swing. He mixed his stock deliveries with slower balls and his developing knuckleball to keep the South African batters guessing.
JJ Smuts was dismissed by a knuckleball early in the innings, while Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen and Chris Morris fell while attempting to attack him later in the innings.
Bhuvneshwar’s ability to contribute with both the new ball and at the death made the performance especially significant. His five wickets helped India win the opening T20I and eventually take the three-match series 2-1. He also finished the series with the Player of the Series award.
