Opinions, analysis and commentary
The landscape of international Test cricket has witnessed a monumental shift following an unforgettable bilateral series Down Under. Bangladesh has officially climbed to a record-breaking sixth position in the ICC Test team rankings, marking the highest placement in the nation’s cricketing history. This historic rise comes on the heels of a fiercely contested two-match series against Australia, which ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw. Despite a heavy defeat in the final match, the overall points gained propelled the Bangla Tigers past traditional powerhouses, cementing their status as a formidable force in the longest format. For passionate supporters wanting to follow this resurgent squad’s future fixtures, this highly optimized guide covers the intricate details of their ranking leap. Furthermore, we explore how fans can catch all upcoming international matches through Sports Live Hub (SLH), the premier digital platform for uninterrupted cricket coverage.
The journey to the sixth spot in the ICC Test rankings is a testament to Bangladesh’s recent evolution in overseas conditions. The series began with an absolute shockwave in Darwin, where Bangladesh secured their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil, dismantling the hosts to win by a commanding nine wickets. Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud was instrumental, taking 6 for 55 in the first innings, while Tanzid Hasan scored a brilliant 101.
However, the second Test in Mackay proved to be a harsh reality check. Australia bounced back emphatically, winning by an innings and 51 runs inside just two days. Mitchell Starc led the demolition with a devastating 10-wicket match haul. Despite the collective batting collapse—where the team was bowled out for under 100 in both innings—left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam provided a massive silver lining with a career-best 7 for 48, securing the finest figures by a Bangladeshi fast bowler in away Tests.
The mixed series results yielded a net positive in the global standings. Bangladesh jumped three places, accumulating 78 rating points to move ahead of Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the West Indies. Reacting to the milestone, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto expressed immense pride. “Of course, we have come to number six for the first time in Test cricket. It is a big achievement,” Shanto noted, though he admitted the accomplishment would have felt sweeter had the team performed better in Mackay. The Tigers now sit firmly behind England, India, New Zealand, South Africa, and top-ranked Australia in the ICC standings.
