Opinions, analysis and commentary
Depth, not European football, is the real threat to Chelsea’s title bid, because their front three cannot carry 38 league games alone. One injury to Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers or Joao Pedro exposes a squad that finished tenth last season despite similar talent up front. A brutal December stretch against Liverpool and Manchester City will test that theory fast, and Xabi Alonso has not yet solved it in preseason. The Carabao Cup and FA Cup add further midweek strain without a single European fixture to offset it.
Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro form an attacking trio that can trouble any Premier League defence. Last season Palmer missed a big chunk of the campaign through injury, and Chelsea still finished tenth under Enzo Maresca even with him in and out of the side. Without a genuine fourth or fifth attacker able to hold that intensity, one injury can break the whole system.
Rogers is still adjusting to this level of expectation, and Joao Pedro, at just 24, remains a work in progress rather than a finished article. That blend of real quality and real fragility is not, on its own, a title-winning formula. Manchester City and Arsenal both carry at least two more attacking options capable of starting without a drop in quality, a luxury Chelsea have not yet built.
Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 at Bayer Leverkusen leaned on players who could rotate into different roles without dropping off. At Chelsea, the creative options behind Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez are thin, and Romeo Lavia spent most of last season out injured. Jordan Henderson, now 36, brings leadership but limited legs across a long campaign.
Defensively, Wesley Fofana has started fewer than 15 league games in each of the last two seasons. New signing Maxence Lacroix, a 52 million pound arrival from Crystal Palace, adds cover, but the back three is still learning Alonso’s structure from scratch. Alonso will need at least one more like-for-like body in each of those problem areas before he can trust his preferred system for a full season.
Chelsea have no European football this season, a direct result of finishing tenth under Maresca and dropping below Sunderland on the final day. Every fixture headache this year is therefore domestic. The Carabao Cup adds midweek games from late August, with a possible quarter-final in December, and the FA Cup joins the calendar in January.
The league schedule itself is the bigger threat. Chelsea travel to Arsenal on September 5, then host Tottenham and Manchester United on back-to-back October weekends. December is brutal: Liverpool arrive on the 5th and Manchester City on the 12th, seven days apart, and a cup run alongside that stretch could expose Chelsea’s rotation at exactly the wrong moment.
Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool each play six Champions League matches between September and December, on top of full league and cup programmes. That workload is real, but it also builds fitness, rotation depth and big-match sharpness that shows up later in the season.
| Team | UCL Matches (Sept-Dec 2026) | Senior Squad Size (approx.) | 2025-26 PL Points | PL Finish 2025-26 |
| Chelsea | 0 (No Europe) | ~25 | ~51 | 10th |
| Arsenal | 6 | ~29 | 85 | 1st (Champions) |
| Man City | 6 | ~29 | 78 | 2nd |
| Liverpool | 6 | ~28 | 60 | 5th |
Chelsea arrive in December with fresher legs in theory, but without the hardening that European nights provide. Losing continental football also cuts into revenue, which limits what Alonso can spend once the January window opens.
The January window is Chelsea’s chance to shore up the gaps that already exist. A third reliable central midfielder, someone press-resistant who can also carry energy, sits at the top of that list, alongside a proven partner for Lacroix in the back three.
Without those additions, a December run of the Carabao Cup quarter-final, Liverpool and Manchester City inside ten days risks feeding straight into the Chelsea Premier League 2026 title race fixture congestion story before the race has even taken shape. Alonso built his reputation at Leverkusen on having the right options for every phase. He has not built that at Chelsea yet.
Is Chelsea’s front three good enough to survive a congested calendar without European football to ease the load? Have your say below.

Yes, Fofana has started fewer than 15 league games in each of the last two seasons. New signing Maxence Lacroix adds cover, but the back three is still learning Alonso’s system.
