Opinions, analysis and commentary
Rinku Singh fixed his IPL slump not by batting harder but by moving differently. A single pre-delivery footwork adjustment, a deliberate walk-across step toward the offside, unlocked every hitting zone that bowlers had been systematically blocking. The result was immediate: 207 runs across four consecutive unbeaten innings, including a 49 not out against RCB on May 13, at a 172.00 strike rate. KKR had a problem. They solved it with a step.
A T20 finisher lives or dies by his first movement. When a batter stays frozen at the crease before ball release, he is handing bowlers a blueprint; they know exactly which zones are unreachable and target them relentlessly.
That is precisely what happened to Rinku in IPL 2026’s opening weeks. He registered 4 against LSG, 6 against CSK, and 1 against GT across his first four batting innings. Opposing attacks read him perfectly, feeding wide-line death-over yorkers and slow cutters into areas his static setup simply could not access. He could neither reach across comfortably nor generate the hip rotation needed to clear the leg side. The flaw was mechanical, not mental.
A trigger movement is a small, deliberate action a batter takes as the bowler enters their delivery stride. Its purpose is to shift the body from static to fluid, redistributing weight onto the balls of the feet and aligning the batter’s internal rhythm with the bowler’s release point.
Rinku’s specific fix was a walk-across step toward the offside just before the ball was delivered. That single shift physically repositioned his relationship with the stumps. Deliveries that had previously landed outside his comfortable arc, particularly the wide yorker, were now inside it. The leg side opened up. His hip drive engaged properly. He could swing through the ball rather than slapping at it.
KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar confirmed the process: the team identified the footwork issue during a rough patch and moved Rinku into centre-wicket simulations rather than standard net sessions. Match-pressure geometry, real pitch, real boundaries, and real spatial relationships are what allowed the walk-across step to embed and transfer.
The split between Rinku’s two phases this season is not subtle.
Four not-outs in a row, with scores of 53, 83, 22, and 49. The bowlers who had blueprints for the old Rinku have not found answers for the new one. Across 9 batting innings this season, he has accumulated 286 runs at an average of 71.50, numbers that belong to a top-order anchor, not a number six finisher.
The trigger adjustment did not happen in the side nets. Nayar pulled Rinku into full centre-wicket simulations, match-pressure environments where a finisher can rehearse the exact situations that had been undoing him.
Centre-wicket practice replicates the spatial relationship between pitch, crease, and boundary that nets cannot. When you are working on a footwork change, you need the correct geometry around you, or the movement never transfers. That is why the walk-across step held up immediately in live games; it had already been tested under conditions that mirrored them. There was no adaptation lag when the real matches came.
Rinku’s resurgence has arrived at the right time, but KKR’s arithmetic is tight. They sit in a competitive mid-table position with 11 points from 11 matches and three games remaining, all at Eden Gardens. Every point is spoken for, and there is no margin for a slip.
Home conditions work in their favour. KKR have historically pushed totals past par at Eden Gardens, and a full-form Rinku in the lower middle order makes that mark more achievable. What the batting revival cannot fix alone is the bowling unit. Surviving three consecutive high-pressure home finishes requires death-over-economy rates to match the standard Rinku is now setting with the bat. The finisher is firing. The question is whether the rest of the squad can meet him there.

What is a trigger movement in cricket batting?
A trigger movement is a small, deliberate footwork adjustment a batter makes just as the bowler reaches their delivery stride. It shifts the body from static to dynamic, aligning weight distribution and internal rhythm so the batter can respond faster to pace, swing, and variation.
Why did Rinku struggle at the start of IPL?
Rinku’s early slump was caused by a static crease setup that left his hitting arc exposed to wide-line targeting. Without a pre-delivery movement, opposing bowlers held him to 4, 6, and 1 across three of his first four innings using defensive yorkers and slow cutters outside his reach.
How many runs has Rinku scored in IPL 2026?
He has scored 286 runs across 9 batting innings, averaging 71.50. His campaign includes two half-centuries and a four-match unbeaten streak of 53, 83, 22, and 49.
What did KKR coach Abhishek Nayar do to fix Rinku’s form?
Nayar moved Rinku out of standard net practice and into intensive centre-wicket simulations to rebuild his confidence and refine his footwork under match-like conditions. The walk-across trigger movement was developed and embedded during those sessions before transferring directly into live games.
