Opinions, analysis and commentary
Bangladesh ‘A’ captain Towhid Hridoy has etched his name into the history books with a magnificent performance during the ongoing tour of South Africa. Facing South Africa ‘A’ in the second four-day match at the NWC Oval in Potchefstroom, Hridoy played a captain’s knock of the highest order, crafting a brilliant, unbeaten double century. This milestone innings not only put Bangladesh ‘A’ in a strong position in response to the hosts’ first-innings total of 512, but it also propelled the 24-year-old batter into a prestigious fraternity of Bangladeshi cricketers. By reaching the 200-run mark on foreign soil, Hridoy joined legendary names like Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim on an elite list of players to score first-class double centuries abroad. This SEO-optimized article breaks down Hridoy’s historic innings, the supporting contributions from his teammates, and how fans can watch international cricket action live using the Sports Live Hub (SLH) platform.
The second unofficial four-day match in Potchefstroom witnessed a masterclass in concentration, resilience, and stroke-play from Bangladesh ‘A’ skipper Towhid Hridoy. Resuming his innings on day three with an overnight score of 75, Hridoy batted with immense maturity against a disciplined South African bowling attack. He methodically accumulated his runs, eventually reaching his milestone double century off 335 balls. His monumental, unbeaten knock featured 22 exquisitely timed boundaries and a towering six, anchoring the visitors’ response.
This achievement marks Hridoy’s second double century in first-class cricket, following his previous 217-run effort for BCB South Zone against North Zone in Chattogram. More importantly, it places him in rare company. Hridoy became only the fourth Bangladeshi batter to score a first-class double century abroad, joining Mushfiqur Rahim (who scored an unbeaten 200 in Sri Lanka in 2013), Shakib Al Hasan (who scored 217 against New Zealand in Wellington in 2017), and Shahriar Hossain (who scored 218 against Defence Housing Authority in Karachi in 2003).
Hridoy was expertly supported down the order. Fellow overnight batter Jaker Ali narrowly missed out on a well-deserved century, dismissed for a gritty 94 off 168 balls, which included 11 fours and three sixes. Later, Hridoy combined with all-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin for a stellar 185-run sixth-wicket partnership. Saifuddin contributed a crucial 87 off 171 balls before falling on the final delivery of the day. Bangladesh ‘A’ concluded the third day at a formidable 471 for six, trailing South Africa ‘A’ by just 41 runs.
