Opinions, analysis and commentary
Gianni Infantino spent seven months building Donald Trump into FIFA’s most powerful outsider, and the price came due in July when a disciplinary panel reversed a red card because the president asked. A gold medal ceremony in December connects directly to a suspended one-game ban in July. Three confederations are now openly questioning who actually runs football’s governing body. Infantino calls it business as usual. His harshest critics call it capture, and the fight over his fourth term will decide who is right.
A shelved plan to sell a fifth of the World Cup’s commercial rights triggered the crisis. The buyer was an investment firm led by Joshua Kushner, whose brother Jared is Trump’s son-in-law. UEFA, the AFC and CONCACAF responded with a joint statement accusing Infantino of deception and demanding a fully independent review.
National federations started peeling away within weeks. Associations from Gibraltar, Ireland and Italy withdrew their backing for a fourth Infantino term, a striking loss of support for a president once considered untouchable inside FIFA’s corridors. He has already confirmed he will stand again when the presidential election is held on March 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco.
Folarin Balogun picked up a red card in the 64th minute of the USA’s Round of 32 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1, 2026, sent off for serious foul play after a VAR review. The automatic one-match suspension meant he would miss the Round of 16 against Belgium. A day later, Trump phoned Infantino directly and asked him to look at the decision again.
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee moved fast. By July 5, it had suspended the ban under Article 27 of the Disciplinary Code and replaced it with a one-year probationary period instead, clearing Balogun to play. Belgium’s football association called the reversal astonishing and filed an appeal, but the appeal went nowhere. Balogun played the full match as the USA lost 4-1 on July 6.
The AFC, CONCACAF and UEFA speak for 143 of FIFA’s 211 member associations, and in August 2026 all three put their names to one open letter. Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, Victor Montagliani and Aleksander Čeferin signed it together, writing that leadership in football is not a possession and should never be treated as power to be held onto. FIFA’s response accused the signatories of running a concerted campaign against the president.
Each confederation’s complaint differs slightly even though the frustration is shared, as the breakdown below shows.
| Confederation | Stated Concern | Public Stance |
| UEFA | World Cup stake-sale plan; Infantino placing himself above the collective | Joint statement; boycott threat; filing legal papers; withdrawing support |
| AFC | Lack of consultation; trust broken through deception | Joint statement with UEFA and CONCACAF; call for independent review |
| CONCACAF | Governance failures; commercial structure | Joint statement; CONCACAF president Montagliani cited as potential challenger |
Claudius Schaefer runs European Leagues, the body representing 53 professional men’s and women’s competitions across the continent, and he gave the bluntest assessment yet in an interview with The Athletic published in August 2026. He said the group questions whether Infantino is still suited to the presidency at all. He also noted that the office’s influence has expanded every year, with major calls made before the people affected by them get a real say.
Schaefer’s argument is not really about Infantino as an individual. Removing him is the precondition for reform, not the finish line. Getting those changes through, he explained, only becomes possible under different leadership.
FIFA’s presidential vote lands on March 18, 2027, at the 77th Congress in Rabat. Infantino confirmed his fourth-term run back in April 2026, and nominations close on November 18. Nobody has formally entered the race against him yet.
Victor Montagliani is the name UEFA reportedly views as the most credible alternative, while Čeferin has already ruled himself out of running. Winning would require the support of at least 106 of FIFA’s 211 member federations. Taken together with the Balogun ban reversal Trump FIFA saga, the numbers suggest Infantino’s grip on the presidency is no longer as secure as it looked a year ago.
