Opinions, analysis and commentary

Harry Kane has the strongest case, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia the closest challenger. The ceremony takes place at the London Palladium on Monday 26 October, and most coverage frames the night as Lamine Yamal versus Kylian Mbappé, but the numbers describe a broader contest. Kane’s goals, his domestic double and a deep run at the World Cup give him the edge. This piece weighs the cases using the club and tournament records available. The PSG winger can point to the biggest club night of the year.
Eligibility runs from 3 August 2025 until the World Cup final, played on 19 July 2026, so the whole 2025/26 club campaign and the tournament both count. France Football drew up a 30-man shortlist. Below is each leading player’s club output in every competition, along with their World Cup situation.
Yamal collected the league title and a World Cup winner’s medal, yet managed only one goal at the finals. Mbappé finished as the tournament’s top scorer, but Real Madrid ended the season empty-handed. Two prominent rankings put Kane first, so this is not a two-man contest. Ousmane Dembélé, the reigning winner, reached 20 goals and slotted the spot-kick that drew PSG level with Arsenal in the Champions League final, a game PSG won in a shootout.
| Player | Club | Goals (25-26) | Assists (25-26) | Major trophies | World Cup 2026 status |
| Mbappé | Real Madrid | 42 (all comps) | 8 | Champions League, La Liga | Qualified (France) |
| Yamal | Barcelona | 25 | 20 | La Liga, Spanish Super Cup | Qualified (Spain) |
| Kane | Bayern Munich | 73 | 8 | Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal | Qualified (England) |
| Kvaratskhelia | PSG | 19 | 9 | Ligue 1, Champions League | Did not qualify (Georgia) |
| Dembélé | PSG | 20 | 12 | Ligue 1, Champions League | Qualified (France) |
The French daily L’Équipe ran an unofficial poll showing Mbappé ahead on 34.2%, with Kvaratskhelia second on 24.3%, Kane third on 8.6% and Yamal outside the top three. Voting in it had not closed when those figures were published, so they may have moved. Treat it as a measure of public mood rather than a guide to the outcome.
The real verdict belongs to a jury of 100 journalists, each representing one of the top 100 nations in the men’s FIFA ranking. Every juror ranks ten players, giving 15 points to the first choice and then 12 and 10 to the next two. Ballots were closed on 28 September, so no later development can alter the outcome.
The Georgian’s argument rests on Europe’s toughest competition. In 16 Champions League games, he produced 10 goals and six assists, a return that earned UEFA’s Player of the Season award. Two of his goals came in the 5-4 win over Bayern in the first leg of the semi-final, and in the final he earned the penalty that brought PSG level.
The weak points are a total of 19 goals across all competitions and the absence of a World Cup, since Georgia failed to qualify. Voters who value international football will mark him down, and that may be enough to keep him behind Kane.
For Bayern, Kane finished with 61 goals and seven assists. His 36 Bundesliga goals won the European Golden Shoe on 72 points, well clear of Erling Haaland (54) and Mbappé (50). Bayern also took the league on 89 points and added the German cup, while Kane contributed six goals at the World Cup as England went as far as the semi-finals.
The weaknesses are easy to spot. Bayern were eliminated in the Champions League semi-finals, and England fell to Argentina. Even so, no other contender pairs this much scoring with this much silverware.
Weighing it all, Kane has the strongest claim thanks to his scoring volume, two domestic trophies and a long World Cup run. Next comes Kvaratskhelia, thanks to his Champions League numbers, and Dembélé’s defence of the title keeps PSG firmly in the conversation for the top prize.
Nobody outside the process will know the jury’s choice until 26 October, so read this as analysis, not a prediction. Among Ballon d’Or 2026 contenders beyond Yamal and Mbappe, the numbers point to Kane, though a voter who prizes Europe’s biggest night could still choose the Georgian.
Is Kane’s goal tally enough, or does Kvaratskhelia’s Champions League run matter more? Tell us in the comments.
Who is favourite to win the 2026 award?
The result stays secret until the ceremony on 26 October. Mbappé leads the French daily’s unofficial poll, while two major rankings place Kane first, so no clear favourite exists.
When does the 2026 ceremony take place?
It is on Monday 26 October 2026 at the London Palladium. This is the first time the event has been staged in London, and the shortlist contains 30 players.
Who is on the 2026 shortlist?
Thirty players are nominated, including Kane, Mbappé, Yamal, Kvaratskhelia, Dembélé, Messi, Haaland and Bellingham. PSG have the most nominees of any club on the list, which reflects their Champions League triumph.
Which period does the award cover?
It covers 3 August 2025 to 19 July 2026. The end date is the World Cup final, so the tournament counts alongside the full club season, not only the domestic games.
Who finished in the top three of the newspaper poll?
Mbappé, Kvaratskhelia and Kane filled the top three places. Yamal sat outside them, and the poll was still open when those figures were reported, so the order may change.
