Opinions, analysis and commentary
Cole Palmer deserves the armband more often than Bruno Fernandes, but only once Chelsea’s fixtures ease from gameweek four. Bruno holds the edge in gameweek three alone, with an easier home fixture and set-piece control that has already produced a hat-trick. Both players scored 25 points through the opening two rounds, and both carry genuine explosive upside every week. The real debate isn’t which one is better; it’s which one to trust in any given seven days. Owning both, at under £22m combined, remains the safest play of all.
Bruno’s underlying numbers in gameweek two were staggering. He posted eight shots against Ipswich, more than anyone else that round, was joint-top for big chances with three, and finished with the highest expected points of any player in the gameweek. He turned that into 23 actual points via a hat-trick and an assist in a 5-2 demolition, a return that few midfielders in the league could match.
His set-piece profile remains intact under Michael Carrick’s system. He’s Manchester United’s undisputed penalty taker, first-choice corner deliverer and direct free-kick threat, having taken six spot-kicks and scored four of them last season, while crossing the defensive contribution threshold in five separate games. That combination of attacking and defensive returns is rare at this price point.
He’s a nailed-on starter expected to play every minute, with Champions League football and a favourable early fixture run adding to the appeal. The one real caveat is away form, since he blanked in gameweek one at Hull, but his home record under Carrick has been exceptional, and most of his big returns have come at Old Trafford.
Palmer’s case is just as compelling, and his price makes it sharper still. At £9.5m, he costs £2.5m less than Fernandes and matched his 25 points across the first two rounds. In gameweek one at Fulham, he scored, assisted and took maximum bonus for 13 points at just 14% ownership, a huge differential gain for anyone who held him early.
Under Xabi Alonso, Palmer holds Chelsea’s full set-piece hat-trick of penalties, free-kicks and corners, a scoring floor that adds to his naturally high ceiling. Alonso’s fluid 3-4-3 lets him roam into dangerous zones, and he was directly involved in four of Chelsea’s first five goals across the opening two rounds of the season.
The injury concern from last season is real, since he missed a large chunk of it through fitness issues, but his pre-season statements confirmed he feels fully fit heading into this campaign, and his early performances back that up.
Both players return roughly the same in points but very differently in price. The numbers below tell the story heading into Gameweek Three.
| Player | Price | Points (GW1-2) | Shots in Box | FDR Next 3 GWs |
| Bruno Fernandes | £12.0m | 25 pts | 8, GW2 alone | GW3: EVE(A) 3, GW4-5: TBC |
| Cole Palmer | £9.5m | 25 pts | 6, GW1-2 | GW3: ARS(A) 5, GW4: HUL(H) 2, GW5: TBC |
The fixture picture is where this becomes a short-term call. Chelsea travel to Arsenal in gameweek three, one of the toughest fixtures available, while United host Everton at home, a much gentler draw. That alone tilts the armband toward Bruno for the coming round.
From gameweek four, the picture flips. Palmer gets Hull City at Stamford Bridge, a far friendlier match, while United’s schedule becomes less predictable. Owners of both players can simply rotate the armband by fixture difficulty each week, a luxury few other combinations offer at this price.
For gameweek three, give Bruno the armband. His shot volume, home set-piece control and the easier fixture against Everton make him the safer premium pick right now.
From gameweek four onward, Palmer’s home run, lower price, and Alonso-boosted role shift the balance his way. The optimal approach is owning both and treating the captaincy as a weekly call rather than a season-long commitment.
If forced to pick just one for the long haul, Palmer’s value at £9.5m and full set-piece control make him the better structural hold. That’s the essence of any FPL midfielder captain pick 2026 decision: match the armband to the fixture, not the reputation.
