Twenty-two goals across three tournaments settle one debate and open another. Mbappé’s third-place strike against England in Miami on July 18, 2026 pushed him past Lionel Messi and Miroslav Klose to become football’s outright leading World Cup scorer, and at 27 he could still add to that tally in 2030. The more interesting question now belongs to the players chasing him, most of whom are barely into their twenties. Four names already sit on the board with real career totals, and the arithmetic behind catching Mbappé is far harder than it looks.

Mbappé’s Path to Twenty-Two World Cup Goals

Mbappé built his total in three distinct steps. He scored 4 goals at 19 during France’s title run in Russia in 2018, then added 8 more in Qatar in 2022, including a hat-trick in the final against Argentina as France lost on penalties. At the 2026 tournament across North America, he scored 10 goals in seven matches to win the Golden Boot, becoming only the fourth player in World Cup history after Just Fontaine, Gerd Müller, and Sándor Kocsis to reach double figures in a single edition.

He finished with 22 goals from 22 appearances, exactly one goal per match played across his career in the competition. No forward in the modern game has sustained that scoring rate across three tournaments spanning eight years.

Kylian Mbappe World Cup 2026 scoring record

No player has previously reached 20 World Cup goals in fewer than four tournaments. Messi needed six editions to get there, and Klose needed four. Mbappé averaged 7.3 goals per World Cup across his three appearances and also holds the record for goals in World Cup finals, with four in total, one in 2018 and a hat-trick in 2022.

At 27, he remains a realistic starter for the 2030 tournament in Spain, Morocco, and Portugal, meaning this new mark may not stand untouched for very long.

The Young Forwards Already on the Board

Several players already have a head start on the chase, even if the gap to 22 is enormous.

Bellingham and Haaland are tied on goals but arrived there in very different ways, one across two tournaments, the other in a single debut edition. Saka sits just behind on four career goals from two editions, a slower burn than the two names above him, while Yamal has barely started with a single goal from his first appearance at just 19 years old.

Age and Tournament Access Matter Most

Reaching 22 World Cup goals takes roughly five to six goals per tournament sustained across three or four editions, and history shows only five players have ever scored ten or more goals in the competition. Bellingham already has 8 career goals from two tournaments and two more editions likely ahead of him at his current scoring rate.

Haaland is the most efficient scorer of the group by output, but Norway’s World Cup access cannot be assumed given how rarely the country has qualified. Yamal, still only 19, has the longest runway of anyone on this list with three more tournaments plausible, though a winger’s per-tournament ceiling tends to sit lower than a central striker’s. Only five players in tournament history have ever scored ten or more goals in a single edition, and Mbappé is now one of them twice.

Bellingham Looks Like the Realistic Challenger

Bellingham is the most credible name on current form. He is 23, plays for a strong England side, already has 8 career World Cup goals, and posted the highest single-tournament total ever by an England player under 24 at the 2026 finals. Two more tournaments at his 2026 scoring rate would put him almost exactly level with Mbappé, assuming England keep qualifying and keep starting him up front.

Haaland remains the dark horse given his scoring rate, Saka offers a slower but steady path as an accumulator, and Yamal’s age gives him more World Cups than anyone else on this list. Still, no player alive is closer to the Kylian Mbappé World Cup 2026 scoring record than Bellingham, and that gap alone makes him the name worth tracking through the next two cycles.
